My family tree is broken. My mother's side of the family moved over here during WWII and there's really no record of their family from their mother countries as they left due to the war and some family issues. My father's family there is very little known past my father's parents except that my father's mother had her family from Ireland, and his father's family was from Lithuania. Immigration butchered the spelling of my family's last name so anybody who has the same last name as me, spelling wise, is indeed related to me. I am, however, the last possible carrier of my last name. So when I die, my lineage ends. Kind of scary as I don't foresee me having children before I pass away. (As that will probably be in the next ten years due to health reasons).

OMG exactly what did you catch from that Scottish bird?
The AIDS that she got from sharing skag needles, I'm thinking!
Was that too harsh? Turely sorry to hear about your health problems really!

Heh. Just the eventual death due to kidney failure. Still in early stage 1 of kidney failure, but unfortunately once it starts it doesn't stop.

On the list, or not an option? (If you don't mind me asking. If you do...ignore)

Not that far yet. That comes in at Stage 5 of Kidney failure. Stage 1 is spillage of protein in your urine and decreased Glomular Filtration Rate (GFR). Basically, you don't really notice any physical symptoms but your kidneys aren't able to filter toxins out of you as well as they used to. That's where I'm at. GFR of around 91 with normal being around 120-130.

Stage 2 is when you start to see physical symptoms such as strong darkening of the urine due to blood passing through the kidneys, fatigue due to decreased production of the hormones that cause red blood cell production, and slight swelling (edema) in your extremeties.

Stage 3 is when you physically feel nausea, fatigue, just overall illness. Your kidneys are barely able to remove the toxins from your body and dialysis is in your near future.

Stage 4 is when your GFR drops to around 30 and if you don't start taking dialysis treatments you will die.

Stage 5 is when the GFR drops to 15 or lower and at that point your kidneys are fully dead. Without a transplant you will die very soon.

So I'm at Stage 1, and at the pace of destruction of my kidneys in about ten years I'll be down at the needs dialysis stage and most likely on the transplant list at that point. So yeah, it kind of sucks and right now I'm just trying to enjoy what I've got to see if I can slow down the destruction.

Wasn't going out drinking a bad idea then?
I suppose you've got to let your hair down once in a while to preserve your sanity and all that though...
So what happened anyway, just genetic or some exotic bug? If you don't mind me asking...

Yeah, the nights of heavy drinking are a thing of my past. This past Tuesday was really just a one-off thing.

Anyway, I've been a diabetic for 28 years. Basically had it my whole life. The kidney failure is just the eventual end result of having diabetes for so long. The extra sugar in the blood will just eventually damage the kidneys no matter how in control your blood sugars are. After 28 years, they just got damaged enough to where proteins, which should not normally be present in urine, are passing through due to damages done to the glomeri(sp?).

I don't mind talking about it. I mean, eventually we all go. If it gets really bad, then yeah, I'd be on a transplant list and if I do get to receive a kidney from a deceased donor, I would also get their pancreas and the diabetes would go away. I think adding on to the stresses from that news about the beginning of kidney destruction, coupled with the psychological issues caused by all the pain medication I was on last year due to the numerous broken bones I had, it's just been rough to handle. Thankfully, I do have some friends who are supporting me and are willing to listen to me whine. lol.

I'm right there with you on the pain in the arse of diabetes. Long family history of it, and I joined the ranks @ 17. My numbers usually aren't that horrible so I'm putting money down that my ticker is going to blow before the kidneys do. The family history of heart issues is a bit stronger than the diabeetus....

Okay, that made me laugh out loud. Hehe. Tonight was difficult. My bar, really my "Cheers" where everyone knows my name and understands my diabetes and treats me well, is being shut down. The owner just had enough and sold it to another person who's doing a big renovation. So today was the "last hurrah". I generally don't go out on Sundays, but felt like doing so today. It was so odd. Really got to know the people who are regulars there, made some great emotional connections to folks, and the owner cracked open a bottle of Absinthe fortified with Sage Oil. (a legal way to supply Thujone, the active component of Absinthe which supposedly causes the "odd" feeling). I think it may be a placebo effect, but it was a really weird cognitive "drunk" that I felt/still feel even though I stopped drinking three hours ago. Tonight was like my "last hurrah" with my bar closing and my own health fading away. I figured one more night would not impact my overall death, and I really wanted to just hang with my friends. Many of whom have indicated that if it came down to it, they'd donate a kidney. And all this was said before drinking took place. It's really nice to have friends like that, and they'll always be close friends of mine.

Cheers everyone. To a long life, and no cares in the world.

Yeah, I took a taxi home tonight.
