>We got the California Games Mega-Tech cart.

Looks good.

As mentioned many times before, I always wondered what the arcade version looked like compared to the home computer version (I bought IBM version either 1988 or 1989). I played the computer game a fair number of times....maybe not as much compared to Broderbund's Ancient Art of War and Ancient Art of War at Sea computer games back then, but I did play California Games many times on the computer then.

The only other 1980s era arcade game that I hope can be located/preserved is Arcadia's Rockford because that is another game that I wonder how it compares to the home computer version of Rockford. Fortunately, unMAMEd has image references and one of the Arcadia flyers on TAFA has mention of Rockford on the flyer, so it does have a decent chance of actually existing and maybe being eventually found.

So far, that has not been the case with California Games since no flyers are online yet that advertise California Games. And it was probably a guess on System 16 web site of if it existed. (this was probably before Sixtoe's time of running System 16 web site?) http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=706

It's now great to finally have this verified and confirmed.

That leaves 15 megatech games yet to be found or identified. Great to have California Games now off of that list.

>>Broderbund's Ancient Art of War and Ancient Art of War at Sea
I love them I played Ancient Art of War CGA version on a 286 computer with EGA monitor:_( Years a go I noticed that there is an EGA version of this game. I must use ramkey.exe (copyiipc i think) to crack it.
I played California Games PC too this one was EGA I don't remember if 3.5" or 5.25" disk.

it is a 1-to-1 copy of the megadrive port (which I preferred over the SMS version).

[ad] you can give it a try (to the megadrive port, I mean) on MESS, through the very good megadriv/genesis driver, just in case you cannot wait to test until u2 is out [/ad]

Ramkey.exe was one of the protection bypass tools that came with Quaid Software's CopyWrite.

Yep. iirc Central Point Software's CopyIIPC had their own with "Nokey.com"

I liked CopyIIPC, but knew Quaid Software's CopyWrite was the better progam purchase back then in 1980s to deal with Softguard or some of the off-the-wall copy protection schemes.

Although I bought those two games, I probably was using a cracked copy since I didn't want to mess up my original diskettes. Broderbund did re-release an EGA update version in either 1988 or 1989. I believe the EGA upgrade update was for the "at Sea" game. I don't recall if the first Ancient Art of War series was updated to support EGA.

One of your fellow Spain folks there and I talked a bit about the two games in the past because he likes the Art of War series also.

I do feel that Ancient Art of War could have been a good game in arcades or better yet....in some bars or restaurant establishments. Although Ancient Art of War is a lengthy game play format, it should be possible to reconfigure game to use "coin continue" support like some of the games such as Golden Tee Golf series. That way if players want to spend extra time playing the game, make sure "coin continue" credits option is enabled. ;-)

I could see a 4-player cocktail table unit with 4 smaller monitors for each player to keep track of their own soldiers and then a large full screen monitor in the middle that would show all 4 players the entire map or battle scenes. That would be ideal design layout imo.

o/t: imo Atari Rampart doesn't count as a replacement for Ancient Art of War. Some users think Rampart was what Art of War should be in arcades. I disagree with that. Ancient Art of War had more selections to work and probably would be ideal for a numerous input key layout that could easily rival the number of keys used with a mahjong cab unit. ;-)

>I played California Games PC too this one was EGA I don't remember if 3.5" or 5.25" disk.

iirc Epyx first released a 5.25" diskette version and then released a 3.5" diskette version a couple years later. I bought California Games from a friend who was tired of the game. He only kept diskette and maybe the manual. The other stuff was already thrown away.

Back in either 1990 or maybe 1991, while at some game show, a vendor had California Games 3.5" diskette version in unopened, new boxes. I bought that from the vendor. It was a good buy because I like the lady models on that box. I still have that game and box kept in storage with a select few remaining 1980s software I still keep.

I had pretty much every 'games' series game Epyx released on the C64 but over here that meant tape, which meant waiting 5mins to play an event for like 2 mins which was pretty ridiculous, Cali Games, on the other hand I picked up from a Computer fair on import (actually branded 'Epyx' and not 'US Gold') on 5'2" disk which was MUCH better - even saved your high scores back to the floppy!
