ROM/HDD dumping
#244270 - 01/23/11 04:03 AM

Honestly, I wasn't sure where to ask this, so I posted it here. Sorry if I'm missing something though...

Let me start from the beginning. I'm interested in attempting to emulate a certain arcade cabinet, Atari Vegas for my personal amusement and hopefully a benefit to the scene. More specifically, I'm interested in emulating War: Final Assault (my favourite arcade game). Not saying I don't have faith in the MAME team, but it doesn't appear that they are too interested in this cabinet atm, so I'd be happy to take a crack at it while they are busy with other stuff.

So I'm buying the hardware of this arcade cabinet off of eBay and I was wondering how would one dump the contents of the HDD? Do you throw it in your PC and hope it reads? Sorry if this is a n00bish question, just never done this before. The reason I want to dump my own besides keeping my endeavour/experiment legal is because I don't want the HDD image to be in chd format. I'd like to see the raw data files.

Thanks.

That won't be a problem if you learn how to use chdman.exe.

chds can be extracted and restored to real hard drives. People do this all the time to fix their arcade games.

Also take a look here: http://maws.mameworld.info/maws/set/warfa (read the notes below the game/hardware information part).

If your version is not 1.91 it is needed for documentation purposes!

Guru's guides are good but there are a lot of arguments about the best ways to do CD's. That won't make any difference to you though since you aren't messing with them.

War: The Final Assault (warfa) is already in MAME.

Yep. It's now seeing if able to pick up where Aaron left off.

warfa - Something is wrong with the on-board ethernet chip emulation. If the chip is hacked out, the game boots, but that's not accurate. There were many rendering issues last time I checked.

Fair warning: arcade hardware is (at least in this case) not a PC, and not many arcade HDDs use any kind of known PC partition table or file system layout. So while you'll be able to image the HDD it's strongly unlikely you'll be able to actually open it in Explorer and see files.

Isn't there also a danger in hooking up a hard drive to a Windows PC because windows writes a volume serial number (or something like that) to every new drive? I think I remember people being extra nervous when cloning TiVo hard drives that you don't accidentally boot into windows.

EDIT: like this....

Is there a command line option for this?

namely, you take the CHD, you launch

chdman -extract warfa.chd output.raw

and you will get a 1:1 copy of the raw data which were inside the original HDD (of the version in MAME), we try never losing data when we can avoid it...

It doesn't happen automatically, it asks first. People hit OK or Yes instead of Cancel and then they are screwed.

I cloned my DISH Network HDD using CHDMAN. I wrote the chd file back and it worked fine. Norton Ghost (old or new Power Quest version) could not do this because of the file system not being recognized.

Got it. I'll try that tonight.

Question about getting it ingame though, do we have to disable the network/ethernet adapter code though a command line switch, or do we have to compile it yourself after modifying the source code?

Thanks.

Before CHDing your HDD, please remember to restore all factory settings in the game through the service menu, otherwise your dump will have no use in MAME.

Hi. I have the warfa for MAME and it runs, but the game never starts. It says "timeout trying to join server". I have it set up to be the server, but it still doesn't work. If you change the options to "server: off" then it just keeps trying to join the server "Try# 25"
Do you know how this can be fixed?

Warfa in MAME is marked not working so good luck getting it to play.

That's okay, I don't think you were meant to.

There should have been a user warning message visible that states the game War: The Final Assault is not working.

As of June 2015, it is one of many games in the src/mame/drivers/vegas.c file that is still not working. The only games listed as considered working are:

Gauntlet Legends
Tenth Degree (prototype)

Remaining games listed as not working:

War: The Final Assault
Road Burners
NBA Showtime
San Francisco Rush 2049
Cart Fury

>Do you know how this can be fixed?

The games from src/mame/drivers/vegas.c will need almost the same treatment as what was required to get some of the games from Iteagle.c up and running. I don't see it happening for some time.
