I just wrapped my Christmas gift...
#243282 - 01/10/11 04:13 AM Attachment: SAM_1472.JPG 1872 KB (1 downloads)

Progress slowed to a crawl over the holidays, but hopefully I can start nailing in rafters soon.

I should be busy the next few evenings tacking down the wrap and putting flashing in. After that the real fun begins.

Some may say "Wrap? On a garage?". Yup. Good idea for moisture wicking, and will help wind-break any wide seams or gaps. I even went the extra-anal mile and taped my seams before covering. I may not heat the garage, but if I ever do it'll take less energy to get the job done.

A shot of the entrance from the rear. Looks narrow, must be the angle. This side of the wall will also be covered in OSB for added shear strength.

The header is doubled LVL. Unnecessary for a gable wall opening but I figured:

a) It's a long span, and a heavy door. Using 2x12s would probably be tempting fate. I usually lose that battle.

b) The most noticeable feature of a crap garage is a "sagging header". Right above "overloaded attic" sag. I didn't want either, so I over-built just about everything. It really isn't that much more of a cost to do things right. A few hundred bucks over the whole garage for materials at most.

The diagonals at each corner serve little structural importance, but I thought it looked nicer than the typical "box". Entryway is 14'x8', so it really won't hurt getting in/out of the garage at all. (not that cars will be in here often.)

Door was free, I'll probably be ripping off that ugly trim and putting on something thicker...

Just looked at the "before" photo. Thought I'd share it again...

Yeah, that tiny cracked pad was the old garage. I could barely fit my old Ford Festiva into it. My truck might have been bigger than it.

Really should have wiped the mud off that 2x10 before using it as a header...

Oh well. Nice view.

And for the eagle-eyes in the audience, the "extra" lumber at the bottom and right of the opening aren't structural. Home depot had an off sized window on blowout, needed a thick shim or two. WAY under budget though.

It's all looking really good. If I didn't know any better, I'd guess that you're taking a dry run on a house.

Lookin' good. Are you getting help or doing it mostly alone?

I have plenty of help available when needed for the big jobs, but a great majority of this has been solo. Foundation pour had a full crew of helpers, and I've called buddies over to help lift walls. Short of that I'm not able to plan exactly when I can get out there, so much of my work is one or two hours at a time. Any longer than that and the nail gun starts to freeze up anyway.

Such is life with a pregnant wife and a two year old I guess. I also feel real bad about calling anyone over when it's 15 degrees outside...

Wish I could have done this over the summer, but I'm already 3 months into my 9 month window to get it done.
