Sticking controls (X arcade jtsick)

Playing around with my new Mame install, I noticed that in a lot of games, my controls get stuck. If I choose up, sometimes the game listens and the sprite moves up, but sometimes it does not move up, until I moved the stick down and then up again. The problem is also present with left/right moves.
Common problem or not? Can it be fixed? It shure screws up a lot of otherwise fun games.

I don't know if this helps or not, but when I first built my cabinet in 2005ish , I bought a "combo" of 2 joysticks and 20 buttons or so from XArcade, the buttons were ok, I'm still using them today, but the joysticks were shite. I remember that I was having a lot of sticking controls with it. I ended up replacing them with some nice 4/8 way switchables from ultimarc and haven't looked back since. Good luck, sorry I haven't any better info.

Thanks guys, for the info!
I think I found the cause of my problems here: my PC seems too slow to pull everything off (it's a 1,61Ghz with 512MB). I switched the screen res back from 800x600 to 600x480 and the sticky controls are gone. I guess I will have to find a machine that's a bit faster ;-)
EDIT: I might just start with upgrading my RAM to 1GB. The 512MB can also cause the system to swap to virtual memory a lot.
