UPS never ceases to amaze me...
#242724 - 01/05/11 09:38 AM

Tracking my RMA replacement drive for a 1TB WD that's been getting flaky. I had it shipped to my office in South Boston.

Windsor Locks, CT, United States
01/05/2011 12:02 A.M. Arrival Scan

East Boston, MA, United States
01/04/2011 10:00 P.M. Departure Scan
01/04/2011 7:17 P.M. Arrival Scan

Philadelphia, PA, United States
01/04/2011 6:06 P.M. Departure Scan
01/04/2011 5:11 P.M. Arrival Scan

DFW Airport, TX, United States
01/04/2011 1:22 P.M. Departure Scan
01/04/2011 10:01 A.M. Arrival Scan

Ontario, CA, United States
01/04/2011 5:31 A.M. Departure Scan
Ontario, CA, United States
01/03/2011 9:34 P.M. Origin Scan

So the package flew into Boston, where I can see the airport from the conference room window. Then they loaded it on a truck and drove it ~120 miles to Windsor Locks, CT (passing within 2 miles of my house, BTW), where they will shortly put it back on a track, drive it another 120 miles, and deliver it a few miles from where it landed, hopefully by tomorrow.

I understand that their logistics are way more complicated than just my package, but it just seems like there would be a more efficient way.

Yep. Been there, done that... new [Re: DMala]

What really irritates me is if a date is given for it's delivery, it gets close, like in the same state or some towns/counties away... Then it goes away - as into another state, or even close to where it originally came from! Moving the delivery date further ahead on the calendar.

I had a shipment come from Ohio, it got to somewhere in the SW region of my state. Then it went back to Ohio... even as far as Florida (wtf!?)... I eventually got the package, but it was (iirc) 2 weeks after the initial estimated shipping date.

ETA: Oh wait! I recall now. First it was being delivered by FedEx, then it changed hands to the USPS. It was after that that it started going on it's epic journey.

I'll take that over waiting an extra month for an international package (The item was coming from Mexico.) to be delivered by the USPS. Initially I thought the package was lost from the holiday rush until the seller started an inquiry and then voila the package mysteriously ends up in US customs a day later and two days later I pick it up from the post office because a signature was required.

There's an Ontario in California, and UPS has a hub there?

It does say Ontario, CA, United States....

Yeah, it blew my mind the first time I saw that. The tracking info at the time only showed the city and state. I saw Ontario, CA and I was like, why the hell did they send my package to Canada? Oh, wait...

FedEx isn't much better new [Re: DMala]
#242992 - 01/07/11 11:05 AM

In fact you could argue it's a bit worse:

Dec 24, 2010 10:04 AM On FedEx vehicle for delivery ONTARIO, CA

Dec 23, 2010 8:22 PM At local FedEx facility ONTARIO, CA

Dec 23, 2010 9:37 AM On FedEx vehicle for delivery ONTARIO, CA

Dec 23, 2010 8:24 AM At local FedEx facility ONTARIO, CA

Dec 23, 2010 6:02 AM At dest sort facility ONTARIO, CA

Dec 23, 2010 4:30 AM Departed FedEx location MEMPHIS, TN

Dec 22, 2010 9:20 AM Arrived at FedEx location MEMPHIS, TN

Dec 21, 2010 8:55 PM Left FedEx origin facility LOS ANGELES, CA

Dec 21, 2010 6:45 PM Picked up LOS ANGELES, CA

Dec 20, 2010 8:07 PM Shipment information sent to FedEx

So, let's see. Picked up in Los Angeles, California on Dec. 21st. Instead of coming to my house, 50 miles from LA, 5 miles from the Ontario, California hub, they ship it to... Tennessee?!? Then right back out to Ontario, California. Out for delivery, then back to the Ontario hub (they said "unexpected volume", so they couldn't deliver. Wait, you don't expect high volume at Christmas?!? Really!?!) It's a good thing I didn't pay for 2-day delivery. Oh wait, I did. At least it made it in time for Christmas :-P
