And if you finally create them: don't relay on them being readable/usable. Test this - BEFORE you need them.

Was it the Google search I showed you of the dozens of people linking to it that pushed you over the edge? 
Anyhow, don't feel too bad - had the same thing happen with an external hard drive last year. Fell off the desk, head crash.

Nothing I can do with backups. I only get harddisks from old PC's all of which had bad harddisks. Go figure..

that's the reason, but i already knew about its popularity... i get a few emails each month of people thanking me. that page got 78k hits in 2009, and 89k so far in 2010.
it's highly unusual, but i felt compelled to keep it alive for general help. some of the emails are people fixing their shit after considering spending HIGH dollar for repairs. i also feel like this is a piss poor job from manufacturers, and a borderline attempt at keeping "repair" money coming in.
i'll probably fix the page up and make it more succinct and better laid-out soon.
