Looking for site mirror/backup
#241579 - 12/19/10 07:57 AM

If anyone happens to have an old mirror or backup copy of RCATT (Roger's Classic Arcade Tips & Tricks; was at http://www.classicgaming.com/rcatt) laying around, would you be so kind as to post it somewhere and make a link to it available?

I'm working on something for which that would be extremely useful, but archive.org is very incomplete for that site.

archive.org doesn't have a lot of the site content. I'm really looking for a mirror or backup at this point.

any hints as to what you are working on? I have a ton of that stuff backed up, but more so by category instead of by site.

Sure

Basically, I'm putting videos on YouTube of arcade game easter eggs, tricks, etc. The channel is up at http://www.youtube.com/user/arcadegametricks - there're only two videos in there now (and I need to flesh out the descriptions of what's going on in the videos), but I'd like to expand it out over time. Some of this stuff has already been posted as video, but nobody's really collected it in one place, which is what I'm going for.

Anyway, I was going to use RCATT as my guideline for doing all of this since that site had reference screenshots for a lot of the text descriptions of the hidden features, which would have been helpful. I know a lot of these things can be found on textfiles.com, etc., but RCATT's content would have been preferable for establishing a baseline.

I'd really be interested in seeing that

Well... new [Re: AeroCityMayor]

Well, I tried some of the other archiving services out there (yes, there ARE others, but they all pale beside The Internet Archive) and came up empty.

But a few things you should know.

1. This trick will give you all pages from the Internet Archive on all dates.
http://web.archive.org/web/*sr_1nr_4310/http://www.classicgaming.com/rcatt/*

[EDIT] Explanation of trick: Basically, the * at the end displays all pages found in that website rather than just the results for that specific URL. Then, take a look at the drop-down in the right-hand corner. See that it allows you to display how many per page - anywhere from 10 to 50 results? Well, how many results did you get? Over 4300? Well, try setting the drop-down to 50. See what it did to the URL? Try putting 4310 in there instead of 50, then go make a cup of tea (depending on your Internet speed) and look at your results.

2. RCATT moved to http://rcatt.classicgaming.gamespy.com when the GameSpy takeover happened, under "new ownership".
http://web.archive.org/web/*sr_1nr_370/http://rcatt.classicgaming.gamespy.com/*

This should give you much of the old content. Even if it is all from different dates, this may be the best you'll get.

If I get time later, I may try rebuilding this piecemeal. Hopefully someone else comes forward with a site backup. Maybe you can get in touch with Roger Bonine or whoever this "jared" guy is, former maintainers, to see if they saved a site backup? It's a long shot, but...

I was hoping http://archive.kontek.net saved it for you, but sadly they did not!

You know, after all these years playing Mr. Do I never picked up on the fact that the tunnels are shaped like the level number.
