Marquee Monitor
#240572 - 12/07/10 01:44 AM

I have searched high and low, and I can't find any company out there that manufactures monitors in odd sizes. Specifically, I need an enlongated one for displaying only the game marquee in a MAME cabinet I'm building. Anyone know where I can find a VGA panel monitor about 6" high x 18-19" wide? I know I'm probably dreaming here, but I took a chance.

But if you find one, let me know.

I did ponder an idea similar to this initially but scrapped it because it would just look too hokey for a stand-up cabinet. I did find this http://www.digitalsignagemaker.com/en/products/show.asp?ID=246&MaxID=27&MinID=61, which would be ideal for my purposes, but it's not a monitor; it's apparently a two-screen device where you load individual files via USB and play them.

However, I've changed my mind about an upright cabinet and am instead going to build a sit-down, Star-Wars-type booth, and this idea would lend itself well to that. I can have the top half of the screen sticking out of the top of the cabinet and have it serve multiple functions. It can either ditto the marquee or display a reduction of the game screen for outside viewers to see, etc. At that rate, I wouldn't even need a widescreen monitor format.

Brilliant!
I can believe that there might be some way to keep it plugged into a PC instead of a USB removable storage drive... can't quite think of HOW though...

I wonder how much it costs?!

I wouldn't be concerned so much with the price. It would just take someone with electronics skills far beyond my own to get it to work.

I thought about this on my own, using two small 4:3 monitors to make a marquee. The scale factor is good too, you could make a 29" x 8" with two 14" LCD panels. I'd like to try it out if I had some spare monitors lying around.

BTW, that product is the best fit I've seen so far, but it's way to small for a normal marquee.

The other thing I though was to use a retro projector on the cab, that seems doable since the rest of the image would fade into the inner of the cab, maybe using light absorbing cloth would be good. The problem would be to achieve the required image size in that small place, probably would have to use a mirror and project from the bottom of the cab. Also, I would try it out if I had an extra projector lying around.

Agreed. I probably wouldn't use this for an upright cabinet, but it would work for the sit-down type I'm building. I pondered the projector idea as well but couldn't think of a way to make it work.

I contacted the company that makes this to see if a modification was obtainable, but the marketing guy blew me off like a drunk street preacher. I told him there'd be a demand in the emulation community for such a thing, and all he did was ask me to market their EXISTING products. Ugh.

When you find something that doesn't have a price, it means they're wholesalers or something. It's like calling a bottle-making company and asking for a bottle. Instead, you have to *appear* to be a company looking for at least a thousand or so pieces.

Someone at BYOAC did this. I can't rightly find the thread there, though.
