Can some old timer explain this to me?
#238265 - 11/07/10 05:06 PM

Why the hell do I' have pots, pans, bottles, and fine china buried 4 foot deep in 3 separate locations of my yard? I'm not talking a few isolated pieces either. Honest to god warehouse sized caches of the shit.

I know people buried their belongings when the great Chicago fire hit, but I'm 20 miles from that...and in 3 separate spots? Four feet down?

From what era or decade are they?
At the start of the second world war wasn´t there a fear of invasion?

As for the depth, that can be explained by the fact that if the owners moved away without digging them up then they have forfeited (four-feeted) them.

Terrible joke, I know, but I couldn´t resist it.

Old fine china you say? new [Re: italie]

Maybe you've found an ancient bourgeois burial ground. See any snobby bones or faux jewelry too?

That stuff is worthless, let me take it all off your hands for free, no charge to you. I'll even pay the shipping if it helps you out.

I'd get that stuff appraised... who knows how long it's been buried, eh?

Collectors are weirdos... even those old bottles sometimes carry significant value.

Sorry, the three bottles I pulled intact went to neighbors. Everything else wasn't treated too nicely by the backhoe...

After I finish my current projects maybe I'll go back and play archeologist for a weekend.

Interesting thought. The only identification I found was "Derwood", "IRIS E.P.P." and a partial of "Homer..."

Homer might be "Homer-Laghlin"...which dates as far back as 1871...so that might be worth a look see...

I think Jews bury their plates etc. for a certain amount of time if they touch food that isn't kosher. Seems your heiss' past Jews had Alzheimer's and forgot about them, or they were lazy and like you know what, I'd rather just buy new plates than to use that shovel again. Tell your heiss to get better Jews next time.

Derwood is commonly found at auctions. You might get some money if the stuff isn't too damaged.

Wound up, can't sleep, can't do anything right, little honey / Oh, since I set my eyes on you. / I tell you the truth.
I can't get it right / Get it right / Since I met you...

Yeah... I'm curious is italie had a gift-horse, and he looked in it's mouth with a back-hoe and knocked out all it's teeth.

Dig carefully... you may be unearthing your salvation from your housing woes.... warehouse sized stashes of collectible china... unearthed with a backhoe?!?

Had I known, I would have been more gentle with the controls....

Something about the flood or all that water possibly being a blessing in disguise? (Seriously. Did I? )

Maybe they're worth a lot of money, maybe, if they're antiques or whatever. You could recoup some of your expenses for your remodeling.

Now ya gotta post some pics.

Any old property in the UK I've had anything to do with always seemed to have at leat one rubbish tip in the garden. I even remember as a kid going to the old farmhouse my dad grew up to look for old bottles burried in the rubbish tip. I think people just burried their crap outside years ago.

There is no sin except stupidity.

The previous owners did not have trash removal or trash removal did not exist at the time when the land was being lived on.

Piles of broken dishes...

Were the prior owners Greek? Maybe they had a back-yard wedding!
