Guys, how do you run extremely old and prehistroic versions in Windows 7?

Hi. Can anyone tell me if it's possible to run very old and ancient versions of MAME in Windows 7 64bit? I am trying to run MAME 0.36b11, and it's, not to my surprise, giving me a windows compatibility error. I even enabled "run in Windows 98" and "XP" compatibility modes, and still nothing. It's the command line version and I'm using the latest Emu Loader. Is there a work around for this?

If you got it from MAMEDEV, it's apparent that you didn't read the column headers as it clearly states that MAME 0.36b11 is in fact a "Binary (DOS)". In fact, the first official Windows release was MAME 0.37b15 - you might have better luck with that.

So I'll have no choice but to use 0.37b15 binaries and up in order to run in Windows? I see. Thanks for the heads dude

I heard that if you run it in dosbox it will actually break the MAME.exe file, requiring you to re-download and install it. Is this true?

Interesting. Does DosBox have a front end? If so, can I then use a mame front end within dosbox's front end, so I don't have to deal with any commandline prompts?

There are frontends for DOSBox itself.
There are no frontends for DOS MAME. You wanted old MAME, that's how it was used
