Forced MONO (Neo Geo)
#237398 - 10/26/10 04:57 AM

I know how the team likes to keep things original but it got me thinking, the MV-1B and other JAMMA one slots are all MONO by default. Why doesn't MAME have an option to do this?

For that matter why not for all games that don't have a setup option for mono?

For the masses I'm sure it's no big deal but for those of us who like to run MAME on cabs it'd be kinda useful. Sure it's not MAME's main intention to add things for cab users but hey, there's some pretty detailed book keeping info on hand, why not this?

Just a thought anyway, not trying to start a war! I'm sure there's a reason somewhere.

I should note when I say an option to do this, I mean the in game menu. Though afaik, the ini has no facility for this either.

I don't know about that. I have a 1 slot and there's just a big switch for going between mono and stereo, neither is default, and if someone has a mono audio cab then they can just wire L and R to the one speaker and be done with it, although there probably should be a switch for motherboards that supported it (might already exist somewhere, I've never looked).

At least the MV-1B is mono JAMMA only. I think the earlier, larger one slots had a switch (far better boards IMHO, though much more cumbersome).

I can't speak for eveyone but I know I don't want to mess with wiring in my cabs for MAME. I run both MAME and JAMMA. MAME is mostly for testing ROMs I dump to repair boards but I sometimes use it to try out games I am thinking of buying.

Regardless of that though, 90% of JAMMA cabs (not JAMMA+) out there are mono and I recon it'd be pretty useful to just hit up an option for those not really careing about stereo/wiring to hack up their cab.

I see what you're saying, I was thinking about cabs just wired for MAME. Well yeah there should be a switch available for motherboards that had one, in my opinion. Someone will probably code it in at some point.

Maybe even motherboard revision selection? Might seem extreme but one of the goals it seems of MAME is to become complete.

I know some boards were unable to run certain games and in the interest of documenting these nuances and even to help test out boards it'd be a nice feature.

I guess that's a little off topic though.

It's not off topic, well not for the forum. I think the amount of different boards they released is kind of gross, and some even had different sound hardware. I guess it should be expected though when you have a platform that lasted that long. One of the early boards is still needed to figure out its correct sound emulation. Maybe after it's found and Lord Nightmare has his way with it, a switch could eventually be made for some of them, if someone gets bored enough to code it up.

True enough. There are a few revisions I have only heared about, and I've had enough pass through my hands.

It'd be nice to see a favorite have some sort of update though in the recent slew of no name games.

Incidently, if I happened to come across an unknown I'd be glad to document it as best I can, though most cross my workbench as repair candidates.

Probably the only software fallback for the time being would be to set the Windows sound system to mono (assuming you're using Windows for the cab).

In XP at least, there is an option in Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio > Sound Playback to change the speaker setup to Laptop mono speaker (all other options are for stereo/quad/surround, or no sound at all). I'd gather Vista and Windows 7 still support it as well, as it's been there since the Windows 95 days.

I appreciate that and it's true, that support is there. It does sound whiney I guess but I just don't know why MAME doesn't support it seeing how it's a feature of certain MVS boards.

Just wondering what the reasoning is.

Here is a list of the various MVS boards and if they support mono/stereo.

You and the guy who wanted 5.1 support can have an MMA octagon fight and we'll implement the survivor's choice of audio output ;-)

Seriously, MAME generally emulates the PCB, not the cabinet. To the extent that we emulate a cabinet, it's usually the fullest featured one the game can support, which always means stereo for Neo Geo. And as has been noted, Windows lets you force global mono, which is a good choice for using a J-PAC or whatnot.

Heh, MMA is just a way to get gay porn on family television.
