Does anyone read anymore?

I do but I'm always looking for a the next book to read so I was wondering what other people were reading to get some suggestions for what to read next. If anyone is interested in posting here I suggest to keep it simple: 1. What are you currently reading? 2. What the best book you have recently read? I'm leaving out "whats the best book you have ever read?" because mine changes the more I read. For me its: 1. Darwins Radio http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwin's_Radio 2. Hyperion Cantos http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperion_Cantos
Any takers?

I used to love literature, but this book killed it for me:
The Name of the Rose http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Name_of_the_Rose
F**king inaccessible "gotta look for 20 unknown words in dictionary per page" book. I could probably had enjoy it if wasn't a one month assignment homework then (my classmates cheated and watched the movie), but is hateful when you're obliged and have also other six assignments equally dutiful. So, don't take my word on it. Since then i read books equally "heavier" (over 500 pages, smaller fonts and no images), but only if they're technical language programming references.

Currently just working through my backlog of Analog and Asimov's magazines; I've reached March of this year.
Last book I read (if not counting a serial later published as a novel) was by Vernor Vinge. I don't think I've thought of any book as being a bad read in over a decade.
The fall TV season and a certain game are taking most of my time right now though.

read this year;
animal farm 1984 ender's game salem's lot under the dome
i tried "the founntainhead" for a 2nd time and gave up again a few chapters in. i plan on picking up that michael crichton book that was just released (pirates) soon.
on my watch list are "the alchemist" and "world war z".
as for best book... that's a hard one to pin down. i feel like i should be recommending a best book based on what you like, hehe. this is gonna sound retarded, but i can't read "the giving tree" without crying for some reason. it takes 2 minutes to read it, and i'm bleary-eyed about a minute in. LOL

World War Z is a pretty light read, but entertaining if you're into zombies.
The Zombie Survival Guide is also worth checking out. The last section contains anecdotes "from the field" which form a sort of narrative. Max Brooks basically took this idea and ran with it to create World War Z.

I only got round to reading anything by Asimov this year (shameful for a SF fan). I read I Robot and Foundation (book 1) Its SF heresy but I didnt think they had aged particularly well. Hyperion is by far the best SF novel I've ever read, absolutely awesome.

The full Hyperion series, yes, that was good. Lots of book there.
That was Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine I was referring to, not the work of Asimov himself. Between them, it and Analog Science Fiction and Fact provide a good supply of short stories every month, by famous and not-so-famous authors, and generally well chosen; not at all the ray-gun spaceman dreck they churned out back in the mid 20th century.
Though I prefer Analog, as it has less fantasy-like stuff, and gives you a fact article or two of random science topics (What's in a Kiss? The Wild, Wonderful World of Philematology by Richard A. Lovett, to go with his story (co-authored) Snowflake Kisses in the same issue).

I quite enjoyed it and thought it was a good finish to the trilogy. I LOVED Pattern Recognition.

It was okay, I guess. Any step back into scifi by Stephenson is a good step in my book. ![](//www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

I have a voracious appetite for the written word, and a problem with instant gratification when I wander into a Borders or Barnes and Noble with more than $40 in my wallet. Probably the only thing I collect, and even then it's for reading (and then keeping should I ever want to re-read it), not for looking at. Usually have around 10 or more books simmering in various states of completion.
Currently reading... "1001 Video Games To Play Before You Die." "You Are Not A Gadget" - Jaron Lanier "Burton and Swinburne in the Strange Affair of Spring-Heeled Jack" - Mark Hodder
The best recently read? I rather liked "For The Win" by Cory Doctorow, essentially a Young Adult book... Found it preachy as usual but overlooked it. And lately I've been getting into the "Finder" series by Carla Speed McNeil, they're quite excellent.

I'm reading this thing by Alan F Alford called 'When the Gods Came Down' which is a non-fiction work about his theory that all religion is based on a myth of an exploding heavenly planet It's pretty crazy!
