DU Update: EXTREME
#236798 - 10/20/10 01:56 AM

Mark F. donated a Rolling Extreme board. Guru has a broken one already but it uses roms he can't dump yet. It might be possible to get a good dump from it and it could turn out to be a different revision from this one, we're not sure yet.

Edit: Thanks for help so far from ranger_lennier, D. Beneke and N. Francfort.

I dumped all but 2 of the ROMs from Rolling Extreme over a year ago, maybe longer. The undumped ROMs are the SSOP70 graphics ROMs and they won't be different. The main program could be a different revision but the only ROM that will change is the TSOP40 flash ROM at IC38.
Theres enough of it dumped to start the emulation. As you've noticed it's been dumped a year and still nothing so that suggests it's probably not easy or there's no interest in working on it right now.

I don't think very many people would be interested in putting in the work required if the end result isn't going to have most of the graphics. There's no reward at the end of the job. I wouldn't want to work my ass off for scrambled graphics anyways.

That's why you're a Dogg instead of a Dev. Lack of dedication and foresight.

FYI it was one of the interested devs who suggested dumping it as-is without the SSOP70 ROMs. if it was up to me it would still be totally undumped because it'll never run at a playable speed in MAME anyway so its a waste of time dumping it now (later that could change)
But it is mostly dumped and the SSOP70 dumps aren't too far away. So.....

What is the hardware on this thing, anyway? System 16 doesn't know, which is rare - usually Six will make something up at least ;-)

I probably did a Guru-readme for it if you check the archive.
Basically there's a TI TMS320C82 DSP (which is fully documented), 2 large Altera Flex FPGAs (one tied to RAM and GFX ROMs and one tied to sound ROMs), another smaller Altera Max FPGA (tied to the program ROM probably doing some obfuscation etc), a large Chips Express gfx chip (probably derived from earlier Gaelco games like Radikal Bikers etc), plenty of RAM and not much else.

I'm curious to know why the board pic that you posted is so different than the one that is on this site:

http://www.petes-arcade.co.uk/rolling.html

Or am I looking it the wrong way?

The pic on that website is incorrect. It's a guess based on the year the game came out. They guessed that it ran on the same board as Surf Planet.

Laugh it up, I'd guess if I ever got any free time anymore away from work to update >.<
