The fact that you're defensive about it already indicates that you know what the reply's going to be, so why are you poking the hornet's nest?
Besides, about the only thing submitted for u4 that isn't blowback from the lately furious pace of MESS development was Tafoid censoring swear words in the source. I'm planning a new module called shitfucktitties.c in retaliation.

Sorry for the question 139u4, particularly not anything you're talking about, I asked not knowing the answer and I'm not defensive, I know nothing about what has happened in MESS and what you mention. There has been a question to generate controversy of any kind, because I do not like polemics, mamedev entire team does a good job and I repeat that this is not to generate discussion or debate.
Sorry.
This translation is from google and I hope to convey what I mean.

Tafoid very much appreciate the work you do in mame, hope you do not have angry. As I said to RBelmont not know anything about what happened or comments they have made. I think that rather than judge should acknowledge the work you do.
Thanks.

Dont worry about it. He is trying to tell you that MAME is dying.

The amount of times people ask this..
There are two ways: Go to the SVN-Server and download the what's new, and read any changes (If any are stored there)
Or follow the good ol' Guiness advert quote "Good things come to those who wait". Basicly, wait until it's released.

That's not quite accurate. It's more that arcades are dying which leaves us with fewer options.
Also, I've now learned that cracking jokes is probably a bad idea in response to someone using machine translation ;-)

There is no public MAME SVN server.

Thats true. MAME has preserved most of the arcade games of the past already.

Hey guys I am new here and have my Mame cabinet all setup, just curious what is the big deal with updates? I have all of my old favorites working perfectly, what else needs to be updated? I am sure newer games could be added but what is the big rush?

Because older games are also improved. E.g. Donkey Kong had wrong colors until pretty recently, and the sound in games like Asteroids and Space Invaders wasn't correct. Plus it's usually easiest to find ROM sets for the latest version.

This is true. MESS is simply a source overlay to MAME. The source there is that last U release from MAMEDEV + any adjustments made by developers working on MESS drivers. This changes the state of the source in a way to make it non-compilable in many cases for MAME, at least until the next release is published and it's updated from the MAME side.

So, none of the MAME stuff changes unlike MESS? If so, would explain why I saw updats mentioned but never released when i used to do SVN weekly

MAME won't even compile from that source as of earlier tonight. The whats new is not updated and the (MAME)version is 0.139.1.

things in src/emu/ change often on the MESS side and get sent to MAME as well.
from time to time, Micko also ports changes done by Aaron in MAME before the next intermediate release (that's when src/mame/ files get updated), when they are needed to keep MESS in line with latest core changes
finally a few consoles (e.g. megadrive) use components in src/mame/
however, if you get the MESS svn we only ensure that MESS compile, not that MAME does as well. you have to wait next update for that.

Purely out of curiosity: Why was MESS merged with MAME? In fact, can MAME be used to run games supported by MESS or do you still need the MESS executable?

Somehow, I connect 'Good things come to those who wait' to Heinz Ketchup.

MESS is built with the MAME core, not merged.

You need the MESS exe.

MESS has always piggybacked on the MAME source and requires the MAME source to compile, nothing has changed in this regard.
A lot of work being done in MESS recently involves changing files which are shared with MAME (e.g. Sega Genesis-related stuff since there are Genesis-based arcade games) so the changes have to be synced back to MAME for that reason.

Many devices are used by MAME and MESS likewise because they are contained in home/consumer equipment as well as arcade hardware, so it makes sense to organize both source trees that way. And MAME also took advantages of those devices that got implemented for MESS first, so not just piggybacking.
