Now you just need to get MESS working in there, so you can have MESS run MESS on MESS on..
(I know, not going to happen any time soon-- you'd need a more recent Mac since there's 99% certainity you can't compile this WIP build to run on that old hardware)

Patience? Nah, I just know about the nice step-by-step articles we have up.
OS 6 install. OS 7 install.
There should be some blank pre-formatted harddisk images up soon too.

Is sharing a .CHD with a freshly installed OS out of the question, from a legal point of view?

We're not sure. On the one hand, Apple puts the OS up for free. On the other hand, it's Apple

Good point, it's always best to be cautious with Apple.
The installation instructions are easy enough to follow too.

Dunno, you aren't giving any detail, and this isn't really the right forum in which to do so.
Fair warning: if you're using a MESS official release and not latest SVN, most of this Mac stuff won't work. MESS doesn't have u releases, so around this time in the cycle things tend to be long in the tooth.

0.138 works like a charm though. If you're running windows, you'll need StuffIt 9. Here's a good guide. Though, I've tried using Mac SE/30, though it only work on Mac Plus.

Can an emulated MAC system in MESS load CDs? Either ISOs or actual drives?
I have a few games on CD I'd like to try out eventually.

MacOS of the era emulated is famous for not recognizing non-Apple CD drives, and that's just as problematic in emulation. I need to get the ID responses from a real Apple drive.
Most CD games required a PowerPC anyway, I think.

yes i used that guide for running my macse and it worked with that.and yes i used stuffit.problem is ,that with the 0.6.5 sea.bin images, everything is ok.i extract them with stuffi it,which gives me the same files in .SIT extensions.opening these new files with stuffit once more gives me the utilities, system tools disks that are needed for the os.if i do the same with the os images belmont used,(0.6.8)the extension i have this time, once exctracted,is .sea and not .sit like the other ones.thsi extensions is not recognized by stuffit unfortunately.the guide that belmont linked, said to rename such images from .sea to .img.it doesnt work anyway..

Are the resulting images 800k or 1.4MB? MESS does not support high-density floppy images at this time, you MUST use 800k install media.

Myst sucks. Glorified screensaver. Bleh.
*ahem*
Most of what I want to play is in shareware CDs anyway; I just can't get the games because uh, they don't work on Windows.
I'll just use Basilisk or SheepShaver to get the games out of the CDs and copy them to a CHD or something.

In that case, the easiest way is to have (access to) a Mac running OS X 10.5 - it'll mount chdman -extract images (name them .dmg and double-click in Finder) and let you drag and drop files into and out of them. 10.6 won't work - they made it read-only there which is a lot less useful. And since 10.5 will also mount .iso images by double-clicking it's quite convenient - I got 7.6 and 7.6.1 off .isos and into MESS exactly that way.

Yeah, those won't work in those formats, you need to extract the .seas to get actual images.

Not really. I don't have a problem with Mac systems, I have a problem with the company that makes them. :P

I find MAcs visually beautiful. Case and OS. Using the buggers is when I lose my intrest. It took me a while of messing about, and I gave up on MESS in the end for the Mac since I just couldn't get it working. Eventually me and my firend got to play elite (with dominoes pizza ). And every APple product is hideously overpriced

Stuffit 9. Follow etabeta's instructions EXACTLY (do NOT improvise, get exactly the files he says and do exactly the things he says) and it will work.

Most of them, excluding the original, Plus, SE, SE/30, and Classic.

Get someone with a Mac to decompress them then. Windows users can't use the files.

It sounds like your pc or usb hub is probably underpowered for the number or type of devices plugged into it. consider getting a powered hub and plugging that into the pc, then plug half the devices into the hub and half to the pc directly.

The 6.0.8 files are 1.44MB, you can't use them on MESS.

Actually, It was fine about a week ago in the same config, but I think XP got infected with a virus and is slowly failing.

There is a 800kb set of 6.0.8 out there that works fine with MESS. I don't remember where I found them, it was around the time when I started that CHD thread over at Bannisters.

The 800kb versions can be found on Apple's site too, exactly the same page with the 1.4MB ones too.

yeah, but for some reason those files do not uncompress correctly. that's why the discussion was started (have you read previous posts?)

Yes, and if you read, the 6.8.0 800kb floppies can't be extracted using Stuffit 9 on Windows. Either stick with 6.5.0 or find a friend with a mac to decompress the files on OS X.

this starts to be really funny.
you posted "the 800k files can be found at Apple's website", which sounded to me like: "ehi, Sune, you can find the 6.0.8 files you need in that place"...
and I replied "yeah, but for some reason those files do not uncompress correctly."
and you now repeat the same concept as if I said the opposite... can you please decide what you want to say, before posting?

I never said Windows users could use them, but that the 800kb exist in the same place as the others. They do not decompress on Windows.

..you could probably easily decompress them inside Mac OS 6-8 running on Basilisk II on a Windows PC.
Basilisk II allows for access to the host's filesystem, so moving files in and out is easy as pie.
I would attach the disk images here for everyone but even though Apple provides them free of charge on their site, nobody seems to know if it's legal to share them elsewhere.

They can actually be extracted now on Windows using a utility called unar. When it extracts them the files will be the correct size (819kb) but will still have the .sea extension, you then just have to rename them to .dsk and they work in MESS.

Actually, turns out I managed to corrupt the System Tools disk, and it crashes most of the emulated macs. Made it by mistake, oh well.
BTW, I know you need 800KB OSS 7 discs, but do I have to Torrent them or does Apple have them?

Yes, I've seen this as well, the emulated Macs are very sensitive to floppy/HD image corruption, incidentally the same goes for Mini vMac. Basilisk II, not so much. Always shut down from the menu if possible (never ever ESC out of the emulated Mac) and keep backups of all your disk images.
I'm not sure if this will work in emulation - sometimes you can fix corrupted disks with 'Disk First Aid', just remember that you have to start up from something else if you want to run Disk First Aid on your system disk/HD. > BTW, I know you need 800KB OSS 7 discs, but do I have to Torrent them or does Apple > have them?
Apple never made any AFAIK but I know there are modified 800k images of 7 floating around.

So if I search for them, I should be able to mount htem an dthen install OS 7 from inside OS 6?
And yeah it makes sense if the floppies cna crash a system, especially if a crashed program can cause the mac to crash. And I've started using the shutdown button, though I'd originally thought it'd do a ACPI thing and shut down the driver too :P

OK enough is enough. Any further MESS help posts need to be on the proper board (EmuAdvice).
