0.136 ??
#223193 - 05/30/10 02:01 AM

Thought I would try updating MisfitMAME to 0.136.

I didn't want to go further, as 32bit builds seem to have instability issues with the new tools. Also I don't know much about C++. So I thought I'd try the last of the C builds.

However, it seems the core has issues of its own. One game causes a divide by zero error, where in 127 it works. Another game needed to be added to a new internal list (bodgy!), and after that it freezes the emulator solid. CPS1 is a disaster area, the EEPROMS don't save, and all of the sf2 hacks have severe problems. The LED level display in pacman, and monaco had to be removed because the core routines no longer exist. Controls in the Williams games seem haywire. Plus lots of other problems.

Due to this, I may just stay with 0.127, as it is perfectly stable.

I am happy with the .127 as it still used the Donkey Kong samples, and it sounds better than the emulated discrete circuits. Would the button speed cheat still work on the Pac-Man games if you moved to the newer version? I like the button turbo better than the always on or always off, as my area had a few of them before I saw the first always on version.

Just my 2 cents...

Scotty

BTW... FWIW.... I am the Scotty that created both NewPuck2 (the recreation, not the real version found in Mame) as well as Pac-Man After Dark (with the Oh Shit!). You have it incorrectly labeled as Scott Lawrence for PMAD and Midway as NP2. Scott Lawrence and I are not the same person. It is not a big deal if you want to leave it as is, as those are the only two I did years ago, and just did it as a hobby for fun, and never bothered to write to you and mention when you were asking for names of who did what a few years back.

I always want the correct information.. so...What set names exactly? And what name do you want me to use?

As for 0.136, the pacman stuff is exactly the same, however the Donkey Kong is using the discrete sounds... and I agree, they are woeful. Sounds like someone put the speaker under a big thick blanket.

This is the way an original machine is.

You don't by chance have an updated d2k driver that works for 0.136, do you?

How then did they record the samples? They must have used a microphone. Therefore that's how it was. I certainly don't recall playing a donkey kong where you couldn't hardly hear anything.

It is working, except the eeprom doesn't work - a common theme among drivers in 0.136 btw.

I don't know how the samples were recorded or what was done to the wav files after they were recorded. All I know is that when I play an original machine it sounds muffled like that way it is in MAME now. I'm not saying it sounds better, just more accurate. That is MY opinion.

I made a few adjustments in my computer, and the sounds have improved, although the volume is way down compared to pacman.

Also, it seems there was a eeprom bug in 0.136 - the fix got d2k working again.

However 0.136 still does some other weird, inexplicable things - so it has been abandoned.
