(Frankenstein's Monster) Emulator? SNES+Genesis, or GeSNESis
#398146 - 03/14/24 04:40 PM

What if there was an amalgamation of consoles coded into one completely new "console" as an emulator? I say "emulator" so as to avoid the aspect of building something from the ground up. But if that'd actually be easier...

I'm not talking about an all-systems emu. More like a chimera type of console where the chips/hardware from (let's say) the SNES are mixed in with chips/hardware from the Genesis/Mega-Drive. I could only think there'd be an issue with the programming language, but I don't know. Maybe there wouldn't be.

Obviously, there are no games that exist for such a system, but perhaps already existing games could still be used on it since they'd already have the hardware needed to play them within the "system".

Perhaps those same already existing games could be rewritten to take advantage of the other console's hardware.

---

I suppose when it comes down to it, this whole idea comes down to making the SNES faster and able to use more synth sounds or adding those sweet mode-7 effects to some of the MD titles.

All this from wondering what the port of SFII would be like with the SNES voices and the Genesis synth music. I'm sure it's a stupid idea, but it was a brain fart I felt compelled to dump here. Feel free to rip the idea apart or get into technical details of how/why something could never happen.

Sweet synth sounds on SNES? There's not only a hardware solution in the form of a few flash carts with a custom chip called MSU-1, but several emulators let you play those games, either with a modded rom, or with the MSU files in a specific folder and the vanilla rom (with reqirements wrt file names). Randomizers, including map rearranging, sprite changing, and music changing, has come a really long way for many games. Super Metroid is a huge/popular one in this area... I play one with full CD quality, orchestral music, for example.

Well... Neato.

There was a time I played a lot of Super Metroid and hacks/mods of it... Or was it a few of them a lot?

What would be this one you happen to play? I might check it out.

TBH I just downloaded the stuff, chose what I wanted, and made my own modified rom. I don't actually remember the exact places but...

There's a whole lot to digest (and the web layout leaves a lot to be desired) here: https://randommetroidsolver.pythonanywhere.com/

And: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2393/

MOST IMPORTANTLY: https://github.com/Artheau/SpriteSomething

Oh, and if you use spritesomething, be sure to always save as a different name. Applying new sprites on top of a rom that was already built with custom sprites, causes really bad glitches. Took me a bit to figure out that I wrote over the copy of my vanilla rom...
