I'm a fan of classic arcade games, cripplingly incapable of using Google and am going to ask dumb questions
#398112 - 03/07/24 08:03 AM

Is MAME an emulator? What is a ROM? Can I use MAME to make toast in the morning? Do you think I should try actually reading the documentation instead of making fucking eight million consective threads asking dumb shit that's about one Google search away?

> Is MAME an emulator?

I think it’s one of those recursive acronyms like WINE, LAME or GNU so it isn’t an emulator.

> What is a ROM?

A miserable little pile of bits.

> Can I use MAME to make toast in the morning?

Probably, if you run it on a DEC Alpha AXP, Pentium 4, POWER5, or other chip known for high heat output.

No. But it will make you a cup of coffee, and fry your eggs.

Only losers read documentation (or anything else for that matter. Including - but not limited to - replies I get to my own posts.)

That's wildly inaccurate. It was only a few hundred thousands.

I use 'Bing', so I can't find anything.

Of course not. I can't play games on my toaster, now can I ?

Please point me to this documentation place where I can learn all about those really awesome Mortal Kombat 'fatalities'.

I googled 'how can I ask dumb questions about mame', and the results pointed me here.

> Is MAME an emulator?

You need a MAME emulator to play MAME games

> What is a ROM?

The thing behind the monitor inside a MAME machine that makes the game work

>Can I use MAME to make toast in the morning?

Only if you have a Pi Zero and overclock it to 2 GHz so you can play MAMEs like SF2 without lagging, and remove any annoying fans and heat sinks otherwise it won't fit into a credit card sized case with a 1" screen

Nope, all the MAMEs just work straight out the box in RetroArch, especially with the FBAlpha and MAME2000 cores which run everything at full speed even on my weak-ass Windows 10 laptop which only has 4 cores and a 512GB drive lol, I don't know why the MAME devs deleted versions 2000 and 2003 and only have way older numbers like 0263 on their website

I caught a vid on YouTube last week... something about moog synthesizers. At some point I thought of your username and wondered if you had based it on that.

Ah well. I suppose I'll never know.

RELAX and just have fun. Remember, it's all about the games.
