Logitech G27 pedals not working properly in latest build
#397932 - 02/10/24 11:20 AM

Hi guys. I'd like to report what I *think* may be a bug in the latest build(v0.262). The emulator doesn't seem to be reading my pedals correctly. The input signal bar you see when going into the analog setting in the "in-emu" menu is only going half way instead of the full travel. The steering is functioning just fine. I've tried the following....

1)Changing the saturation in the mame.ini everything from 0.85 to 1 to 10

2)Playing around with the three slider settings within the analog settings and cranking the sensitivity all the way to the max.

3)Playing around with the deadzone from 0 to 0.4. to 1

None of these seem to make a difference. For the record, the pedals are fully functioning and works beautifully in previous older versions of MAME(0.246 for example).

For a more game specific example, I went into the test menu in Rave Racer, and tested the in-game switch test. Sure enough, the reading for the pedals are going only to 776 instead of the full 1550 or whatever the max value is supposed to be.

Any ideas why this is happening and do you have any suggestions I can try, or is it a bug already known by the mame devs?

I’m sorry, but I’m rather burned by the way people using driving controls behave, e.g. these reports:

https://mametesters.org/view.php?id=8569

If you want me to guarantee a particular controller will work correctly, you’re going to have to buy me one to test with.

Good afternoon VasCrabb, good to hear from you dude. Hope you're doing well. Thanks for the swift reply. Yes, I fully understand your frustration with trying to get all these different wheels and pedals working with MAME, especially when you don't own the hardware and are basically going off information you've obtained via other methods.

I have to be honest, I was just going to brush over the links you posted and move on, but something told me to click on them and I'm glad I did. I decided to read the discussion within those links in their entirety and found one piece of information that turned out to be quite useful...

You see, someone in one of those threads suggested to the person having the pedal problem, to delete his config file and restart his game. That gave me an idea and I decided to do the same on my end.

Unfortunately, in my case, it didn't resolve the pedal issue. However, I noticed one little change in my controller mappings(I'm using Rave Racer in this case). MAME mapped my gas and brake inputs to brake- and gas- by default. At this point I proceeded into the analog settings menu and low and behold....IT FIXED THE ISSUE!!!! The pedals were reading at their proper, maximum signals, and the slider bars for both pedals reached their maximum value. Great news!

However, I the story doesn't end there....I said to myself I don't want MAME mapping my pedals to gas- and brake-, and just want it to be gas and brake. So I remapped the gas pedals to normal "Joy 1 gas", and what does it do? It breaks the input again and reverts it back to reading only half the signal at full press. That's when I knew the answer, and realized I needed to map both pedals to "Joy 1 gas-" and "Joy 1 Brake-".

Unfortunately, I had NO idea how to do this, and it took a bit of trial and error, as I simply couldn't figure out how to map my pedals in this fashion. But after simply messing about with the option, I finally realized how to accomplish the task....you have to re-map the pedal input THREE times in a row before it assigns the negative value(ie Joy 1 Gas-). Now that I know this, I can now enjoy the game with full functioning gas and brake inputs. And yes, both gas and brake both need to be set to reverse(at least in Rave Racer's case).

VasCrabbs.....can you shed some light on why this was changed in MAME, where the user is required to assign their pedal inputs to have a negative value in order for them to reach their maximum input value? In older builds it was not this way. Not complaining just curious.

Input configuration is documented:
https://docs.mamedev.org/usingmame/ui.html#configuring-inputs

If the pedal uses the entire axis range, the dead zone will be in the middle of the range rather than at the end. It also causes problems if you want to assign a pedal for a UI control if the neutral point isn’t zero.

Ahh thanks for the explanation. Keep up the good work buddy!
