In working shape: Simply the Best 2001 emulation WIP (part II)

Robbie:

“This is the Work In Progress about the Simply the Best emulation, for MAME.
This game is running in another complex platform of dual Philips processors (SCC68070 for CPU, and SCC66470 for video). This hardware also have a Philips microcontroller S87C751 with internal ROM, RAMDAC to create the palettes dinamically, real time clock, battery backed RAM as NVRAM, 24C04A serial EEPROM with I2C bus, a LTC695CN voltage supervisor to manage the battery drains, a Yamaha YMZ284 sound processor, and finally a huge Altera EPM7128SQC100-10 CPLD, MAX 7000S Family to obfuscate the things in an evil way.

The reverse-enginerring is a real pain, due to hundreds of offsets reading and writting, even out of the ranges.

After a lot of work in team with Grull Osgo, we got the game running the demo/attract, with perfect graphics and colors.”

btw: moar….them Nintendo film reels stuff new [Re: gregf]

A video clip of Skyhawk film reel gameplay was posted and I also briefly described how the hardware works.

And a film reel of Nintendo Skyhawk arrives to eventually be restored / preserved. Skyhawk uses a single film reel for gameplay. Take note that the half of the frame plays the explosion effect when airplane target is declared a hit in the film reel target frame. It was an ingenious engineering design back then in which only one projection player is used instead of two projection units used with WG.

I hope reproductions can be made and available for purchase. The film would still require a process to capture the frames to some digital format that could be useable within some emulation / simulation environment, DarthNuno did that with a film reel of Kasco’s The Driver back in 2014 iirc. I recall reading the thread elsewhere and it was an expensive process iirc.
