I have been working on this for a few days. Started with Nightvoice's and Mr'Do's files. Gathered as much as I could find for images made the bezel,topglass for both versions, and Control Panels. Created a true 9x16 for the 2 and 4 player versions. There are also other views Created for WS with just the play selects from Mame Official and some by myself.
The play select for both versions seem to be working fine, if not please let me know. Both games are in the same file because MAME reads the same one for both, but it will remember which view you select per game version, cant run 4 player view playing the 2 player game as there are more plays.
The only thing I can't get to work is the 2/4 player Led on the 4 player game edition, looking at the prints its there but no mention in the mame lay file or CPP that I could find. Honostly I don't believe the input is even addressed and there is no button assignment in the game, so it may not be possible.
If anyone with more knowledge can take a look would be great.

The fungal growth on the trackballs was a strange touch, but.... YEAH!
Maybe this is a stupid question, but they're legal here, so: This game was obviously released in a 4-player version or there wouldn't be related artwork for it, but the driver only offers 2? I thought maybe it was set up under atarifb2, but I tried that clone and it wasn't any different. Is there a hidden way to put this game in 4-player mode?

Would a photo of a brand new missile command size tracball be of use to you for this project?
I happen to have one, or actually had, but I can get a hold of it soon.
Its just a replacement ball.

UPDATE:
Note: trac ball movement is assigned to the Y axis
toned down the haze over the trakballs and assigned the Player controls correctly, also a pic!!
Atari 4 Player FOOTBALL
ROM-atarifb4.zip is different from the
2 player version atarifb.zip
In MAME 4 player CONTROL:
Player 1&2 are on one team
Player 3&4 the other
The screen is rotated from the standard
view , you may want to swap X,Y control
for this game under Input (this Machine)
The Game should have a button to swap
2 and 4 player mode but is not in
the atarifb.cpp its there for SOCCER so
maybe it will be added later. I just
imported both as seperate entries in
my Frontend.
For now the 2/4 player mode button
is lit.
I think I covered everything.
