Yakuza/Judgment series contain undumped version of Super Hang-On
#396719 - 07/24/23 08:42 PM

UPDATE - see my reply for an explanation!

I'm slowly working on a comparison of Sega Arcade vs PC ports on YouTube.

My last one, about Hang-On, explained how the so-called "New Course" version in Shenmue 1+2 remaster is actually the ride-on variant from 1985, and not new at all!

I've since been looking at the other Sega super-scaler games that appear in the Yakuza/Judgment series, comparing in particular to Yakuza 6, which uses the exact same pixel scaling/aspect ratio as MAME.

In Yakuza 6 I found that both Fantasy Zone and Space Harrier are 100% pixel identical to MAME.

Out Run (apart from switched sprites) has the entire sprite layer (but not road layer) moved to the left by 1 pixel (in-game resolution).

However, Super Hang-On appears totally different in the Yakuza/Judgment series, as you can see in this comparison of the Africa stage start line:

The Africa stage in MAME then starts with: right-tightens > left > left/right/left/right...

You can see several real arcade cabinets using this ROMset - note that all are upright units:

2. hhttps://youtu.be/yo_NUdE8rFg?t=927
3. https://youtu.be/kfVSu5afkcA?t=534

Meanwhile the Africa stage in Yakuza starts with: left > left-tightens > right over hill > long left over hill...

I found a real arcade cabinet using this course, and it's a ride-on unit:

So, in short, the Yakuza/Judgment games feature an undumped (or at least not-yet-in-MAME) version of the game!

I had a look into the PC Yakuza 6 install folder, and it has a sub-folder called minigames/segaages_w64/hng which contains the cabinet side graphics as bezel.dds and a file like sa_hng_w64.bin - not sure what would open that.

I also just noticed that Puyo Puyo, which appears in Yakuza 6, has near identical folder structure to Puyo Puyo Tetris (even has a "tetris" sub-folder!) so it's clearly a cut-back version of that!

SUSSED IT... (see why I was confused...) new [Re: VirtuaIceMan]

There seems to be 3 versions of the Super Hang-On track layouts out there - this is based on the first stage of Africa:

Upright cabinet: right-tightens > left > left/right/left/right
This is in these ROMsets:
- shangon
- shangon3
- shangon3d
- shangonrb
- shangonrb2
- shangonho

Ride-On/Limited Edition: left > left-tightens > right over-hill
This is in these ROMsets:
- shangon1
- shangon2
- shangonle (Limited Edition)
- ALSO: seen in Yakuza/Lost Judgment games (which makes sense, as the cabinet in those is the ride-on unit). However the sprites and road-layer are offset in the port, hence my confusion!

Another version (possibly bootleg?): left (road suddenly snaps into place) over-hill > downhill straight > right > straight > long-right
- shangonro

Could this last one be a bootleg? The way the road starts turning then jumps looks suspicious to me...

Here's the video I made about, so you can see none of the home PC ports are truly arcade perfect:
