Choplifter variants vs real arcade footage
#396454 - 06/17/23 02:52 AM

I'm going to make a video of Choplifter soon, so I was familiarising myself with it, as I know there are a trio of open bugs on MAME Testers: https://mametesters.org/view_all_bug_page.php?filter=122733

I then noticed another difference between all 3 versions currently in MAME: both parent choplift and chopliftbl just say "Player 1 1st Sortie" when starting a game, but chopliftu has the full instructions (about the number of people you need to pick up). These instructions can be seen on 2 real life cabinets, but aren't present on the parent (strangely) or bootleg.

There's also, confusingly, what appears to be video of the arcade running in MAME (not specified which version) with music playing on the attract mode demo, which doesn't happen on any of the current versions in MAME, and can't be seen in the arcade versions above (though attract mode audio is a dipswitch, it is enabled in MAME and you hear the helicopter rotors and firing on the title screen).

I just tried them in FB Alpha too and it's similar there (although the parent doesn't work at all and digitised speech is just a sound).

Yes you're right only the ( chopliftu ) set has the full instructions, i'm assuming the unprotected set should be the parent as I would have thought they would sell the protected pcb's first. Are both the parent & the bootleg both bootlegs ? Or is there another revision out there or has MAME's Choplifter sets have a bug or regressed ?

Here's the video I found where the music is playing in the demo about 11 secs in. This version has the full instructions on screen when playing.

Maybe it's a MAME regression. But FB Alpha behaves the same way, unless that shares System 1 core code.

Or maybe a ROM redump did something along the way. I might have a dig into older MAME versions later on.

Whatever it is it needs more investigating to find out why audio is on an attract mode on that youtube video & why there is full instructions on the unprotected set & not the others.

Well spotted though

I tried a few older versions, around when changes were made (0.242-0.241 and 0.212-0.211) and apart from not being able to get the 0.211 ROMset for the parent one), the same versions still miss the messaging when starting the level (apart from Unprotected version). And none had the music on the demo.

So it might be an earlier change to MAME than that.
