Flyer Fever 2023-04-08
#395950 - 04/08/23 06:01 PM

I want to dedicate this flyer update to James (aka Mr. Do!) for his generosity because he gifted me an exceptional Namco flyer that markets Puck Man as Snapper. This was a flyer I pursued and lost a few years ago, and well, now I know who outbid me.

This flyer update is exceptional for other reasons too. I obtained Fantastic Voyage by Universal. 17 years ago Andy Welburn contributed the Electrocoin flyer for the same title on TAFA, but we've never seen the flip side until now.

And while damaged, it was worth pursuing another early Data East DECO game flyer; 2-in-1 Eagle, that features Alpha Fighter and Head On.

The other flyers speak for themselves. Undiscovered, until now!

2 in 1: Eagle (1979) - Data East DECO [The flyer is damaged. Includes Alpha Fighter and Head-On.]
Burnin' Rubber (1982) - Data East DECO/EuroDECO Mfg. Ltd. [Different distributor stamp]
Cosmic Avenger (1981) Universal Co., Ltd./Electrocoin Automatics, Ltd.
Cosmic Spectar (1980) - Exidy, Inc./Electrocoin Automatics, Ltd. [Also known as Spectar]
Fantastic Voyage (1981) - Universal Co., Ltd.
Mahjong (1978) - Irem Corporation [Play Table Series]
Namco Video Games Catalog (1978-1980) - Namco, Ltd. [Highlights include Navarone and PuckMan promoted as Snapper]
Planet Probe (1985) - Try Corporation.
Pleiads/Super Planetoids (1979-1980) - Tehkan Ltd., Atari, Inc./Electrocoin Automatics, Ltd. [Also known as Pleiades and Asteroids]
Space Panic/Zero Hour (1980-1981) - Universal Co., Ltd./Electrocoin Automatics, Ltd.

Fantastic ! I never knew Pac-Man was marketed as Snapper, so is there a prototype out there with Snapper as the title ? There has to be as why would they make a flyer for it as Puck-Man was already on sale by that time. I hope someone knows if it exists.

Yes, I hope so too.

After searching for Puck Man and Snapper, the story goes in an unexpected direction. Apparently a clone of Pac-Man was developed for BBC Micro by Acornsoft in 1982.

Namco of course went after them.

Heh. That’s amusing even though it had to have been a bummer a few years earlier. That will be a topic in itself in case I can drop off bezels for scanning to Mr. Do sometime later.

A great update this time around because it should help fill some previously known gaps. There were questions about some entries from past several years.

> 2 in 1: Eagle (1979) - Data East DECO [The flyer is damaged. Includes Alpha Fighter and Head-On.]

This flyer addition adds further verification that what was emulated earlier was an actual product back then.
Granted it was already known back then, but the flyer find just confirms it.

https://github.com/mamedev/mame/blob/657...cdual.cpp#L4998

GAME( 19??, alphaho, 0, alphaho, alphaho, vicdual_state, empty_init, ROT270, "Data East Corporation", "Alpha Fighter / Head On", MACHINE_WRONG_COLORS | MACHINE_NO_SOUND | MACHINE_SUPPORTS_SAVE )

> Burnin' Rubber (1982) - Data East DECO / EuroDECO Mfg. Ltd. [Different distributor stamp]

This flyer is an important additional find. This helps clarify that a European regional location did exist and market Data East products within European region. This helps confirm existence of European regional version of Deco cassettes that have yet to be found and supported. It also means someone on MAMEdev can do some updates on the specific entries shown below. Minor stuff, but the updating should reinforce the fact that European regional versions of cassettes needing to be found with ties to EuroDECO Mfg. Ltd. A good flyer find.

/* 06 */ GAME( 1981, cnebula, decocass, cnebula, cnebula, decocass_type1_state, init_decocass, ROT270, "Data East Corporation", "Nebula (DECO Cassette) (UK)", 0 ) // 1980.12 Nebula - "NEBULA2 01/021980.11.25" string in cassette data

/* 08 */ GAME( 1981, ctower, decocass, cfboy0a1, ctower, decocass_type1_state, init_decocass, ROT270, "Data East Corporation", "The Tower (DECO Cassette) (Europe)", 0 ) // 1981.03 The Tower (1981.02.04 in cassette data)

/* */ GAME( 1981, ctisland3, ctisland, ctisland3,ctisland, decocass_type1_state, init_decocrom, ROT270, "Data East Corporation", "Treasure Island (DECO Cassette) (Europe?)", 0 )

> Planet Probe (1985) - Try Corporation.

This flyer is one of the top two flyer finds imo for this specific update. I say importance of this flyer is because it finally solves questions about the game when game was emulated in November 2012 which was a big deal back at the time. It was uncertain what was the company name as legitimate or not. Maybe the game was a bootleg and the company name was a bootlegger front name. The flyer has the makings of an actual prototype game being marketed by an actual company. A very good flyer find.

https://github.com/mamedev/mame/blob/master/src/mame/orca/vastar.cpp

https://github.com/mamedev/mame/blob/962...vastar.cpp#L749

GAME( 1985, pprobe, 0, vastar, pprobe, vastar_state, empty_init, ROT90, "Crux / Kyugo?", "Planet Probe (prototype?)", MACHINE_SUPPORTS_SAVE ) // has no Copyright, probably because Crux didn't have a trading name at this point?

If the Planet Probe fan (Bisboch) who was the driver of getting Planet Probe emulated were to visit and see that Planet Probe flyer being found, he would nod in approval…..actually he would probably want to buy a flyer of Planet Probe for himself.

An outstanding update for this year imo. Only way to come close to this update is if Japanese region version flyer of Frogs is ever found.

Greg,
I greatly appreciate the attention to detail on the updates you shared. Despite visiting here almost every day and reading up on the MAME updates, I somehow missed out on the Planet Probe journey that took place in 2012, as well as the various progress on the early DECO video game emulation. Glad to hear the flyers might help.

Last weekend, I made a breakthrough and figured out how to code and style a grid of flyer thumbnails for search results. Seeing is believing, and it's a lot easier to search for flyers when you can see and compare them instead of a list of text. Let me know what you think.

That was a big deal in early 2001 when Juergen B. had first began emulation of the system. It is impressive still being able to find and get a few more titles preserved these days.

The recent flyer find helps clarify European regions of cassette games yet to be found. It also means you get to add European regional DECO flyers on your flyer want list.

The part that makes the event interesting is the fan of the game ( Italy ) distinctly remembered the
melody when a player enters a name in the top ten. Read one of the comments Bisboch and the mention of learning to play piano and he used the Planet Probe melody for practice routines when as a kid in mid 1980s when learning piano.

I am amazed a Planet Probe flyer was ever printed.

Greg,
Thanks for those links, I had never read these entries before now and really enjoyed the story behind its rediscovery.

Bisboch was maybe one of two folks that remembered playing Planet Probe back in mid 1980s

He mentioned starting with asking if anyone played Planet Probe, and spread the word about the game around to different places including getting Planet Probe name on unMAMEd until Planet Probe was emulated. Bisboch had a couple pages created including his own recreated tune as best he recalled the top ten medley tune in which Bisboch recreated tune almost matched the actual Planet Probe top ten medley tune.

He spent the effort in searching for Planet Probe and fortunately things worked out his way. If anything, I am more surprised that a flyer actually was printed for marketing the game. For a limited run of the game, maybe possible for advertising flyers to be printed, but even some of the more wider release and better known games didn’t have advertising flyers printed. That is why the Planet Probe flyer was a surprise to me.
