Breaking my head trying to remeber a game

There was a game where you could choose between 4 characters: A wizard, a warrior, a bard and a ninja (I believe).
The environment was magical-medieval, the view was from above, not isometric but you didn't look the action square sraight down. Very colorful also.
It must've been in the late 80s 'cause the graphics where decent.
Every character had the hability to use a power to convert into something for a brief period of time that was dictated by a book which was constantly changing pages. Some options where a cloud that shoot lightning, a rock that crushed enemies, and stuff like that.
I also remember a 'kind-of' item bar and a phrase like 'Your time wizard' when you started the game selecting that character which was a female.
Other vague memories but I'm not sure of are that it has tower in the title and there was a big black knight boss...
If someone can remember which game this was, it would be awesome.
PD. Its not A platformer or side scroller like some D&D games or golden axe and such.
