Buck Rogers - Planet of Zoom - color changes since 0.148u2, are they correct?
#395161 - 11/18/22 12:30 AM

Me again, still looking at Buck Rogers - Planet of Zoom...

I saw this update made in the past and can confirm this change happened between 0.148 to 0.149:

0.148u2: Corrected rom labels and locations for Buck Rogers and clones [Phil Bennett, Andy Welburn]. Additional documentation for Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom. Noted the encrypted Z80 part number and Sega ID numbers for the CPU and ROM boards. Corrected sprite color prom based on photo of PCB [Brian Troha].

My question is, are the colors now arcade-perfect? The trench barriers are now largely magenta, whilst the towers have shifted color a lot. See comparison:

Unless I missed something the changes in 0.148u2 were all to metadata and notes...except the sprite color PROM was swapped for set 'buckrog'.

There are two sprite color PROM variants it seems. It should be that in 0.148 and earlier only clone 'buckrogn2' has the magenta barriers while 'buckrog', 'buckrogn' and 'zoom909' have the other color scheme. In 0.149 forward 'buckrogn' and 'zoom909' still have the other color scheme.

That doesn't quite answer your question but hope it helps

I took a deep dive and found some in-game footage on a real cabinet. It looks like the towers are the correct colour in 0.149: https://youtu.be/JXX61Kp3CD4?t=687 so the magenta trench walls are likely correct (if rather zany!).

I also find the flyer to be intriguing, as the images look like photos from a real screen, yet contain elements that are not present in the final game (prototype perhaps?), including some sort of fire/ice gates in space and triangular barriers in the trench:

This Zoom909 flyer shows the same triangles in the trench:

They probably thought the walls blended in too much with the trenches and decided to make them boldly stand out.

Look at round 1, sector 4 in the set 'buckrogn2'. Some variant of those gates are in that version.

Yeah, I wonder about the order of versions, Zoom 909 and n2 only have 6 sectors per round. N2 also had the fire/ice gates in space! No other versions have that! But I think it lacks the towers stage.

So many versions of the game, I wonder which was the true original? The home ports all use the towers stage so I presume they're based on an arcade version with that stage.
