(Poly-Net) Warriors, come out and playyyy-ayyy...
#394310 - 06/26/22 02:45 PM

After already working two all-nighters at my day job earlier this past week, I stupidly opted to work one final all-nighter for myself - now that I'm on vacation for two weeks. I managed to tear-ass the Polygonet Commanders and Poly-Net Warriors driver into what appears to be a fully-working state, with non-DSP-related help along the way from OG, Phil Bennett, Haze, hap, and even that Hydreigon fellow.

Other than parts of the player's own tank model dropping out occasionally, the graphics seem pretty much identical to reference footage taken by Phil. Even certain rendering bugs from actual hardware match.

Have some footage:

awesome work Moogly - thank you!

All-nighters ... man, maybe when I was younger, but not anymore. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

HUGE props to you and the work you are doing. It is truly appreciated.

Impressive work, Moogly!

Great progress but an even better movie reference.

Ringing in my new blog with a post about emulating Polygonet Commanders new [Re: MooglyGuy]

Interested in reading a post that goes into excrutiating detail about Polygonet Commanders, its hardware, comparisons to contemporary flat-shaded 3D arcade platforms, and the whole history of its emulation, from its first inclusion in MAME all the way up to now?

No? Ah well.

That was actually very cool to read... thank you!

My mind has always worked a bit "different" than others... where I've always been pretty good at "figuring things out," to where people at work don't understand how I do things sometimes.

And then I read things from you and the rest of the team, and I'm even more amazed. Makes me wish I had learned at least basic programming logic some time in my life, so that I could maybe do some of these things.

The amount of work and effort that goes into something like this is not lost on me. Favorite quote: "How difficult can it really be?"

RELAX and just have fun. Remember, it's all about the games.

This has always been one of my most favorite parts of mame, when some lone night 1 dev will just dive into something somewhat lost and forgotten quietly sitting at a monitor will start digging into the guts of mame to see what is there.

Then after much determination a small breakthru, then another and another, then another dev jumps in, then another wall falls, another dev another wall until all of a sudden something thought unknown and or impossible seems to become possible.

Then after much perseverance from within another accomplishment is added to the annuals of mame and game history quietly.

It's great to see this being done, 1 dev with the help of others working together and actually driving each other 1 bug fix at a time. Reminds me of the old days. Not saying it still doesn't happen today it's that you don't read about it as much as you used too.

.

Only here to annoy...

To be fair, it was largely just me prodding away at it for about 3 weeks, with the occasional insightful comment from others here and there. It wasn't until I pretty much declared my side of things "done" this past Friday evening / Saturday morning that things went into overdrive.

That's not at all to detract from what anyone else did, just that the driver wasn't even in a workable enough state until the past 72 hours or so for anyone to even take a stab at improving the non-3D side of things.

Once the 3D stuff was sorted out, it was pretty much as you say, but in a more more time-compressed form. Frankly, it was a god damned inspiring moment to see so many long-time devs just absolutely jump into the fray to help give the driver what bits of polish that they could. I mentioned that towards the end of the blog post that I linked elsewhere in the thread - it briefly reminded me of the "good old days", when I was in my early 20's and most of the devs were about the age I am now, with so many fewer obligations and responsibilities that come with extended adulthood.
