How to bypass missing ROM image error?

I'm working on a real PCB and I'm trying to do some comparison test with MAME. I want to take one of the ROM images out of a ROMset and see how MAME performs with the missing ROM image. This is not a ROM that the game self-test requires to be present.
But when I try this in MAME (I just removed the one image out of the ROMset ZIP file), I get a "required file missing" error and MAME just exits.
How can I get around this? Can I just use an empty file with the proper ROM image name that MAME is looking for? Or some other method?
Thanks,

Correct.
It can only be done via command line where a part of a romset can have rom piece with the same label but different hash values. MAME should tell you that you have a non-matching hash, but allow you to continue loading the emulation. Just launch from command-line as noted in documents.
