[SOLVED] Required ROM/disk images for the selected system are missing or incorrect. Please select a different system.
#390671 - 04/15/21 09:35 AM

Hi, my game files for xmvsf used to work on Ubuntu 14.04 but they no longer work on my Ubuntu 20.04 system. Below are some details for my setup and the error message I get in MAME.

Ubuntu 20.04
MAME 0.229
X-Men vs. Street Fighter

https://snapcraft.io/install/mame/ubuntu

Quote:

$ sudo snap install mame

13 different variations of xmvsf ROM zip files are placed in this location:

Quote:

~/snap/mame/common/roms/xmvsf/

These additional files are located here:

Quote:

~/snap/mame/common/roms/

* MAME - Bios Pack.zip
(9 apr 2018)

* MAME - Devices Pack.zip
(9 apr 2018)

* qsound.zip
(3 may 2017)

Error Message:

Quote:

Required ROM/disk images for the selected system are missing or incorrect. Please select a different system.

Press any key to continue.

Question:

How can I find out which of the xmvsf ROM files are missing or incorrect? And what does the error mean, select a different system? I'm on Ubuntu using MAME I don't want to switch those.

Hopefully your mame.ini is pointing to the right directory, usually MAME defaults to the mame/roms directory and yours seem to be in mame/common/roms...

I found all the correct mame.ini locations on Ubuntu 20.04 and tried to edit them. The mame.ini file under /snap file path was read only even though the file permissions was 644.
So I just copied all the rom files to every location where MAME would be looking for roms. But it still didn't work.

Quote:

$ sudo find / -name mame.ini

/snap/mame/2334/mame.ini
/home/myuser/snap/mame/2334/.mame/mame.ini
/etc/mame/mame.ini

Then I tried this approach instead.

Quote:

~/mame/roms$ mame xmvsf.zip -rompath ./

Error opening translation file English
ALSA lib seq.c:935:(snd_seq_open_noupdate) Unknown SEQ default
dl-1425.bin NOT FOUND (tried in qsound_hle xmvsf)
Fatal error: Required files are missing, the machine cannot be run.

Quote:

~/mame/roms/xmvsf$ mame xmvsf.zip -rompath ./

Error opening translation file English
ALSA lib seq.c:935:(snd_seq_open_noupdate) Unknown SEQ default
xmvsf.key NOT FOUND (tried in xmvsf)
dl-1425.bin NOT FOUND (tried in qsound_hle xmvsf)
Fatal error: Required files are missing, the machine cannot be run.

  • I'm thinking that Ubuntu 20.04 might have messed up their MAME installation files in their APT and Snap repositories.
  • But I also think my X-Men vs. Streetfighter files are no longer working.
  • So is there a simple test rom file I can use to test if everything with my MAME installation is connecting correctly?

You need the latest qsound_hle.zip - dl-1425.bin was changed a couple of years ago.

Thanks Rob! That solved my X-men vs. Streetfighter issues.

FYI:
I also tried the Legal Roms link from the main page and downloaded the game ripcord.zip. Then I copied this file to these locations but Ubuntu 20.04's MAME installs doesn't seem to be able to display any roms.

  • ~/snap/mame/common/roms/
  • ~/mame/roms/
