Logic Pro 2 music sounds different?
#390511 - 04/02/21 07:33 AM

Recently I decided to play Logic Pro 2 on MAME(UI) for the first time in years only to notice the music/sound was changed to be higher pitched than it was in older versions of MAME from around the early 2010's to 2015. Was this an intentional change? I ask because I want to record the lower-pitched versions for personal use (I did previously but lost all but three of the recordings to a hard drive failure) since I prefer how that version's music sounded compared to how it does now.

At the moment I can't locate any downloads of earlier versions of MAMEUI or other versions of MAME that run the game with the older, lower-pitched music (preferably one that doesn't require much setup to load/work). If I can get some advice to steer me in the right direction I'd appreciate it so I can listen to and preserve the "original" music themes.

Old MAME version can be found here:

https://www.mamedev.org/oldrel.html

Depending how far back you go, you may find current rom sets don't work for game with older versions of MAME.

If all else fails, Burn the manual.

Instead the old MAMEUI can be found here: https://www.progettosnaps.net/mameui/

I checked an older build of MAMEUI from 2010, and I've concluded the altered music is due to logicpr2.zip rather than older versions of the emulator itself. For instance I've seen videos in 2013 use the "new" music while I still heard the "old" music in 2015.

I tried three different downloads of the Logic Pro 2 rom from the web and loaded them into the current version of MAMEUI- they all have the "new" music.

In short, I'm wondering if there's any online downloads of an older dump of Logic Pro that play the old, lower-pitched samples

If you've tried different downloads of the ROM set in the same version of MAME, and they didn't give any checksum errors, then they'll naturally sound the same, because you're feeding MAME the same data. Every file in a given ROM set has its checksum tested for integrity, so what you describe is that you more or less tested the exact same files 3 different times in MAME, expecting different results. I think there's an old turn of phrase somewhere about doing the same thing and expecting different results.

Beyond that, on a technical level, it's unlikely that there would be any sort of dumping error in an older version of the ROM set that would exhibit the behavior that you're describing.

What I strongly suspect is that the old version of MAME that you were using had some sort of bug in how it handled sample-rate conversion, and you happened to have MAME configured for an audio output rate of 44100Hz (more common in those days) than the current 48000Hz default sample rate. Human memory is notably flaky, so assuming you're not simply mis-remembering the pitch at which it used to play, here's what might be worth trying:

1. Record the music to a WAV file at its current rate and pitch.
2. Open the resulting WAV in an audio editor of your choice. Audacity is a good option, and GoldWave to a lesser extent.
3. Pitch the audio down from 100% to 91.875%, while ensuring that any options that talk about "preserve tempo", "preserve speed", or "preserve rate" are de-selected.
4. The resulting WAV will play proportionally slower, but is the pitch more in line with what you remember? If so, the original cause of the lower-pitched music wasn't MAME itself, or the Logic Pro 2 ROM set itself, but how you had configured MAME at the time.

I do have Audacity and there is a way to change the pitch but it doesn't give me any additional options to de-check before applying the changes (and it works by stating how much in percent to adjust it, in this case -8.125%).

Applying the pitch change, it sounds close to how I remember it, but it's not that great of a match either.
I also tried changing the game's sound options to play at lower rates and they still play the "new versions" of the songs.

For reference, this is how I remember the first stage's theme.

There have been countless official versions of MAME over the years, and an even more uncountable number of unofficial builds made by unaffiliated people that have various bugs that didn't necessarily exist in the official version.

I wish you the best of luck in getting an answer from whoever posted that video about what version of MAME, or which cheap hack, was used. Considering as they haven't posted any videos in about 3 years, and the video descriptions run the gamut from irrelevant text copy/pasted from the Wikipedia article about video games, to what looks like the output of a drunk Markov-chain program operating on a data set of about ten different Wikipedia articles, the deck is stacked against you.

I have a feeling it may be a 2011 era build of the emulator and further downloads of MAMEUI just inheriting its options if it is the emulator and not the rom itself. My cousins had an even earlier build of the emulator from roughly late 2008 and it played Logic Pro 2 with the same bugged audio. That said I still would like to examine a download of Logic Pro 2 from the late 2000's or very early 2010's just incase.

Considering it's one of those accounts that just posts brief gameplay footage for an external site I'm not going to get an answer- the game is relatively unknown and there's hardly any footage of it anywhere. I shared the video clip mostly as a point of comparing the unbugged and bugged audio of the first stage.
