MAME Final Lap R date inconsistency.
#390371 - 03/19/21 07:39 PM

Hello everyone,

mame 229, namcofl.cpp Final Lap R (rev.B)

Just noticed that mame says 1995, title screen of the game says 1993, History.dat under trivia says 1994.

Thought this would be the best place to post, rather than mametesters as it's not really a bug.

that does seem a bit unlikely, sometimes the copyright screens can be a year behind if the code was finished before the turn of the year, and distribution happened after, but yeah 2 years is unlikely.

(there are other cases, where on-screen dates are obviously fake, but mostly bootlegs, or modern things designed to look 'retro' so that doesn't apply here)

The alternative option, in case any coinop video game company never had a date release announcement of a specific product being marketed or if every single bit of company history and product history of items marketed and their copyright years lost, would be going by the trade magazines such as Play Meter magazine for announcing products in specific year as best option for recognizing copyright year. With some of the pong clones back in 1970s where copyright year is uncertain, going by trade magazine is probably only option if nothing is printed on circuit board, or no paperwork or flyer were ever printed.
