augmenting internal layout

Is there any way to augment the internal layouts in MAME's source with an external image? For instance, in the by35_playboy internal layout, it would be nice to use an image of the pinball machine's backboard in the upper right quadrant.

I don't know if I'm understanding what you mean, but you can write a lay file for the game you want using and positioning the images you want.

To add what Antolin said... you basically just need to create an external artwork file for that game. You can grab the existing LAY file from the source, then add the image you want, and adjust coordinates from the existing LAY file as necessary.

RELAX and just have fun. Remember, it's all about the games.

Gotcha. I was under the impression that MAME would ignore an external LAY file if there was an internal one. Thanks.

MAME seeks from more concrete to more general. First, it looks for a specific artwork for the game and if it can't find it, it goes to a more general level (for example, a generic artwork for all NeoGeo games, or Nintendo playchoice, etc). If it does not find anything, it goes to another more general level and at the end, if it does not find anything, it uses the generic that MAME has internally.

Good to know, thanks. I'm definitely not an artist but it is nice to see the backglass.
