Stratovox marquee
#389423 - 01/07/21 01:24 AM Attachment: Stratvox.png 5413 KB (13 downloads)

Here's a hi-res version of the marquee I worked on for my 3dArcade model of Stratovox. Scan was from the old Joymonkey site, but many details were missing, including parts of the letters under the reflections in the middle, and the "they've got me!" guy's entire ass was missing. Used hi-res photos I took at Funspot to fix the details.

I didn't see this CPO around and it's pretty simple so I vectorized it. The colors are probably not quite right, it's hard to find a good pic as the surface is metal and the sheen would throw off the colors.

I didn't think to post mine, I didn't know CP artwork is used in MAME. I vectorized a number of Taito CP's when I did my 3d models - this one and Polaris (same artwork, different colors), Colony 7, Crazy Climber, Lunar Rescue, Moon Shuttle, and Zarzon. I'll have to make some hi-res exports of them to post here. Have many other CP's redone too, including most of the Stern uprights: Scramble, Super Cobra, The End, etc.

Are control panel images now supported in MAME somehow?

That would be awesome. Yeah, control panels are used as part of game overlays and it's even possible to animate the control panel joysticks/buttons/lights. You can see examples of how we're using the control panel images at the web site we have on my signature.

Here's one for Street Fighter Champion edition, where the CPO was rendered in 3D by Papa Shine and embedded into the overlay:

That's pretty cool. I'm guessing that these are set up for cellphones then, since that really wouldn't work for a PC monitor.

These overlays we are producing are for a portrait mode PC monitor or TV, in particular large format displays. I have an arcade cabinet set up with a 40" 4K Vizio TV, though I think a 43" 4K TV is the better size for this format.

This style has become more popular recently, with vendors offering pre-fab cabinets for purchase. There are also plans available. But a lot of people still just pick up a large TV and connect it to their regular PC. You can get a 43" 4K TV for <$250 now, so it's not that expensive to do.

Thoggo, who works on these overlays with me, and put our web site together also created a YouTube video explaining the history of MAME cabinets and how these vertical overlays evolved. You can see that here: Intro To the Home Arcade Experience

Here's a shot of my cabinet, which is the 40" model RecRoomMasters was producing last year. They currently only offer 32" models, which I personally feel are just too small to do the format justice.

I agree. I use a 43" with a rotating mount, and it seems to be just right for this. Jibmums, I've been adding control panels all along with working buttons, and I'm in the process of finishing up adding working ball joysticks to all of my files (see attached)(wow is it getting complicated).

I never would even have thought to set up a monitor/tv that way. I just use MAME on my desktop PC with a landscape monitor, same as I have since '03. I'm more involved with the pinball side of arcade games, so I never much used the artwork (except for Battlezone and Armor Attack overlays).

That's actually the setup for virtual pinball too. Another guy who works on these overlays, Briball, he started out with a vertical virtual pinball machine and then started running MAME on the same setup. So it's best of both worlds.

Just thought I'd share out a screenshot with the finished 4K vertical overlay. Really beautiful art set on this game. Thanks again jibmums for the marquee!

I've been slowly adding Control Panels and Marquees for awhile now... I haven't been so "gun ho" about them until more recently, due to still not finding the "perfect" buttons to add to them yet, but they've been in there.

On that note... at any point did you ever make use of any artwork from the FTP over the last nine years? Just asking, 'cause to date, this is the first I've seen anything posted for use in MAME Artwork.

RELAX and just have fun. Remember, it's all about the games.

I must have, although I don't remember what was used from the FTP site, what was used from the Joymonkey site scans before they disappeared, and what was gleaned elsewhere from web searches.

Whatever was used was all for 3dArcade models though, and I generally didn't go crazy with the cleanup because the model textures are only 512 - 1024 pixels wide. Like I said though, I'll have to go thru my archives and post what I did redo, like the control panels.

Anything new on the FTP site lately? I haven't been on there in years and wouldn't even remember where to go or how to log in.

Btw, you mentioned the Polaris CPO, do you happen to have a decent image of the Polaris bezel?

I wish! The only Polaris bezel I could ever find at all was this awful photo. I would LOVE to find a good scan to use in my model.

I have these photos, but I doubt they are quality enough to stitch together into something useful:

Those are much better than what I have. I could probably use them to make a model bezel due to its low resolution needs, but it would be nowhere near MAME bezel quality.
