How much memory I need for gaming? 16gb or 32gb?
#388003 - 09/27/20 04:31 AM

I read from a few websites I only need 16gb. 32gb isn't needed.

I thinking about getting another iBuyPower computer with Intel Core i7 with a AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT - 8GB (VR-Ready). Staying away from Intel Core i9.

https://www.ibuypower.com/

For MAME and Online games.

If it is just for emu and online flash style games. You would be better off with more CPU than memory if you are trying to keep costs low. I can not think of a single game in MAME that needs even 16GB (not saying it doesnt exist just I can not think of any). 8 would probably suit you fine. I only have that much because I run VMs a lot. Just make sure you get something that is dual channel to keep the perf up. You may want to check the benchmarks but AMD is usually better on the desktop range these days. There is a pretty good range of stuff on that site so you would have to be a bit more specific on what you are looking for and thinking and your price range to get a better recommendation.

Some PC games need 8gb.

Even when you streaming on Twitch not enough because it start lagging. USB Game Catcher card require 4gb. With 8gb on top of that. 12gb all together. Leaving 4gb left over for the obs or what ever. There is a reason iBuyPower trying to get people buy one with a 16gb memory.

Dying Light: 4GB minimum, 8GB recommended
Grand Theft Auto V: 4GB minimum, 8GB recommended
The Witcher 3: 6GB minimum, 8GB recommended
Fallout 4: 8GB minimum and recommended
Batman: Arkham Knight: 6GB minimum, 8GB recommended, 12GB required for smooth gameplay on Windows 10 (source)
Rise of the Tomb Raider: 6GB minimum, 8GB recommended
Far Cry Primal: 4GB minimum, 8GB recommended
The Division: 6GB minimum, 8GB recommended
Hitman: 8GB minimum and recommended
Quantum Break: 8GB minimum, 16GB recommended

At this point, 32GB is not needed, but it's just a matter of time until it is. So if you're building a high end rig, go with 32GB if you expect to keep that rig for a long time. That way you won't have to worry about finding a matched set later (although you don't always need a matched set of DIMMs, it does tend to help minimize potential instability).

If your the type of person who only keeps your stuff for a short time and replaces it, then 16GB should suffice for now and then you can buy 32GB later when you buy new hardware.

I have 16GB, but it's DDR3 and I'm still rocking an overclocked 4.4ghz Core i5-2500k and I'm playing through Death Stranding it it runs fine with a R9 Fury as my GPU. That's all pretty old tech at this point, but it still works fine for 1080p.

I'm watching Cities: Skylines loading with mods, and using more than 22GB. Since I only have 16, and I'm at 45% usage without any games running, another 16 would be nice.

This mobo only supports 16GB though, so it's time to start planning an upgrade.

WHEN the 3070s are out, and they've had a month or two to find out what's wrong with them and get better caps that won't crash things.

That means future-proofing includes getting a board that supports 128GB, and a pair of 32GBs to kick things off. Most software would be fine with the 16, I know.

That helps.

Something like a Intel Core i5-10600K or a AMD Ryzen 7 3700X would suit you well. Paired with a nvidia 2060 or 2070. The 3070 3080 are a tad on the hard side to find right now unless you are willing to wait a few months. It sounds like you have already talked yourself into 16GB I personally stay away from the AMD/ATI graphics. Their drivers have never been that great. The hardware is always top notch though.

This should lead you to the right direction of what sort of CPU you want.

Something like this would probably suit what you want https://www.ibuypower.com/Store/AMD-Ryzen-Looter-Shooter
I would downgrade the memory to two 8GB modules instead of 1 16. As that usually gets you 1-3% more perf for low cost. Pretty much anything above that will get you much better perf but at a cost on price. For storage SSD. NVME if you want to pay for it but it is not necessary. With a few sata ports free for some sort of bulk storage if you need it later on.

This is what I am using at the moment https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B085B3DC1T But it is a tad on the pricey side and trackpad is 'meh', and heat dissipation is meh. Other than those three things I am liking it. My req was decent screen, decently portable, and had the ability to play most of my games from the past 10 years decently with 2-3 years out.
