new n64 LLE emulation from Retro Arch
#386257 - 05/15/20 07:29 PM

Reading an article from retroarch about new "Fast and accurate low-level N64 RDP emulation"

https://www.libretro.com/index.php/reviv...-rdp-emulation/

Is this of any interest to mamedev?

is it because the MIT license is not compatible or it might be linked to the recent nintendo server hack?

Not really that.

MAME is a system to create emulation of machines. Whereas RetroArch is a system to glue different emulators together. The goals of the two projects may seem similar but are actually kind of different. MAME seeks to make an accurate representation of the machine. Retro tries to make a playable version of many games (why it has so many choices of emus).

Some of the information out of what they did may be useful but the structure of the programs is probably different enough to not help much. It looks like they are using an API of vulkan to pull this off and a shader. MAME will probably not use that.

While I'm sure you meant well, it's these type of posts that really irritate mame devs. They don't need any help from people posting these kind of messages. Unless you're willing to contribute to the development of MAME yourself, don't waste there time. The dev's know what they're doing and have a specific goal in mind for the project. Quite frankly, they don't need this kind of help. It can come across as nagging the dev's to work on the N64 emulation.

You realize Retroarch got some hacks? Hacking the source which is pretty dumb. Speed hacks and other hacks. They should least try to take all the source hacks out and then start over.

MAME DEV only into non hacks.

I was just interested to hear a mamedevs take on the LLE emulation of the processor.

The news sites are saying how amazing it is so I'd be interested to hear what mame devs think of it given it's not the usual HLE used by all other emulators except mame.

For example when there was a "run ahead" feature added a few years ago and every news site was singing it's praise about it reducing input lag, mamedev haze made a very good post explaining why it was a terrible idea https://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=378864

Yes but this component that has been developed looks different. Seems to be LLE accurate emulation of the processor and not the usual hack you expect to see from retroarch. Or is actually just another hack?
