Next version of MAME will support chesspieces for the electronic chess games again. The old external artwork won't work as-is. Input/output tags will need to be modified. You can use the internal artwork for reference.
In the few past years, while MAME stopped supporting chesspieces(due to source file licensing troubles), CB-Emu, Franz Huber's fork of MAME, did continue. People have made external artwork for that too. for example here: http://foro.meca-web.es/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1219
I made a proof-of-concept artwork, converting Volodymyr's artwork for Designer 2100 Display.

Nice... I noticed this last week and was going to ask about it.
Very cool... I'll play with it for the next update.

The last two months of work just to get the chess games be like what it was when MESS was running the chess games way back then is impressive. Chessboard fans will be thankful. And Stiletto too in case he can eventually retire the old MESS artwork page once MAME gets chessboard artwork on par with what MESS had done with the chess games from years earlier.
