Allied Leisure Hesitation (1974)
#381080 - 02/13/19 05:17 AM

Found possibly the only example of this game, and wrote a post about it.

Awesome, thanks so much!

John Robertson has a parts catalog for the game:

Congrats with finding and getting that game. Good to see the sellers kept cab in working shape. That is an Allied Leisure product I don't recall ever seeing at places when I went to arcades during 1970s era.

Numitron Scoring

Numitron vacuum tubes are sort of like Nixie’s poor sister. They utilize a seven segment display which makes them clearer to read. The tubes only require 5 volts making them ideal for use in an arcade cabinet. Very few bronze age arcade games use external displays for scoring. As a collector, it’s a real treat to see something like them in action.
-

This part is what makes it interesting imo. iirc MAME does some form of limited emulation of 'Nixie' hardware. It was an item that was emulated on MESS side before the projects officially merged...although the source code was already merged before the projects merged.

Unsure what would be needed, if any, to emulate the Numitron vacuum tubes display output in MAME.

To emulate Hesitation video output display correctly, some decent photos of the way the translucent color sheets are arranged on monitor so a proper artwork layout file can be created would be a start.

If logic schematics even exist these days and can be found, that helps as well.

Schematics scans were done last year for a few games including For Play's Sport Center.

I had to take foldout sheets to American Reprographics last year. It was pricey, but they did a very good job with my specific job request.

I wondered who bought the Atari Crossfire cab when it was for auction a couple years ago.
Actual screenshot photos of Meadows Dead Eye is on want list because unsure if that game used any overlay pieces. I saw the cab myself back in 1970s, but never played the game. The only Meadows game I really played was Meadows Bombs Away and that was only Meadows game I played frequently back in the days. The other Meadows games, I don't recall what they looked like.

I don't recall what Meadows Cobra Gunship looked like during gameplay so seeing the photo of what game looks like is neat. I hope a video clip of Cobra Gunship in action is around since I don't recall gameplay itself.

I hope schematics helped in case they were needed if any specific pcb repair work had to be done. I am glad PSE got their act together and improved their manuals for the more
advanced hardware for games such as Desert Patrol and Game Tree.

Interesting cab design (prototype) variation compared to what I remember seeing in arcades. Good luck getting it repaired.

Oh! Great find. I've been trying to track down any paperwork for this game. Thanks.

The owners couldn't even remove the back door. The game needs capping on the monitor and power regulator. I cleaned the knob pots with contact cleaner as a couple of the knobs were jittery. FWIW

I can take better pics or Stilleto can come by and take pics

Would love to find schematics for this game.

Thanks! I gotta get to that one after I make some space.

Yep. Interested in a scan if you manage to acquire it! He could be your last resort for paperwork in general (he's expensive) but he has pretty much everything you would be interested and then some! There's many, many things of his I'd like to see scanned and made available

The only other thing I've seen is that allegedly Hesitation uses Kurz-Kasch TF650 Program Card # 133AB, same as Zap.

Haha! Hopefully sometime this year (finally)

Haven't seen signs of any yet, though it uses the same Kurz-Kasch card as Zap (allegedly) so it may bear overall similarities to that game's PCB.

Google Groups (USENET) archives used to be the best place to go looking for evidence, but Google has recently sabotaged that... I might try offline-searching some of archive.org's RGVAC archives...

Probably two or three different photos of the set up.

a. one with game and monitor while it is not powered on.
b. depending how translucent pieces are mounted/attached, photo to show if pieces are on the monitor or if taped to the plexiglass cover piece.

c. and then a 3rd photo to show that game is black/white
d. 4th photo showing the whole thing color and all showing where the color pieces line up etc.

Should be enough for a decent artwork layout file later on.

I agree. I think Zap is probably the closest Allied Leisure product for reference material.

I didn't know they were trying to pull the plug (make things much harder these days).

I called the business a few years earlier asking about something. It might have been the Kee Games Quiz Show tapes for sale or maybe it was when they had the film reels of The Driver listed for sale....I don't recall exact reason of why calling them.

I had also asked about the paperwork items for sale and the employee that I had talked with explained they make duplicates of originals of the manuals and schematics and have originals carefully stored away.

Maybe a bit of a blessing since it was enough to keep out someone that would have likely butchered that game and turned it into a Street Fighter clone cab. *kidding*

Good luck with restoration work.

Correct. I noticed that part when taking a look at photo. The Meadows Dead Eye game is one of those that is still a mystery of if it uses an overlay piece or has some color tape set up like what was done with Exidy Circus and Midway Clowns. To me, the only memorable Meadows game I recall was Meadows Bombs Away.....and even then I had forgot that when a player pressed the button to drop bomb, there is no whistle sound being played when bomb is dropped onto the targets.

That was a sound effect that was left off of Meadows Bombs Away, but was added to many similar games that came along in following years (coinop or non-coinop games)

I vaguely recall playing Electra's Flying Fortress a couple times, but don't recall if it was at a miniature golf course or in one of the arcades at a local mall.

Yep. As pong mentioned, some of these would have been 'out in the wild' and rarely seen but by a lucky few folks that were in arcades when these games were field tested. I have seen and played various Allied Leisure games back in the 1970s, but this was one of those that I am certain I never saw at places I went to. If Allied Leisure's game designer Jack Pearson were still around, this would have been one of those games worth asking Jack about what was the situation regarding Allied Leisure's Zap and Hesitation being the other.

Jack Pearson was interviewed by GameRoom magazine's author Keith Smith back in 2001 or maybe it was 2002. Keith also has published a book and has Golden Age Historian web site that talks about coinop games. Keith used to post in this forum in the past.

By coincidence, someone from Australia that also posts here on the forum has been trying to find a couple of arcade games that he had played, but that no one has been able to help him name what the games are and he has been searching for probably close to 20 years. He has asked about the games on Australian forums, but no luck yet. The two games he is trying to recall also may have been field tested prototypes. He has searched extensively including searching web sites that host flyers such as TAFA and Flyer Fever, but no luck yet.

Yeah, so many people from the bronze age have passed on. I'd love to speak with anyone involved with URL, Allied, Meadows, PSE. I tracked down the exec who owned the Flying Fortress, but I never heard back from him.

Did Keith publish his book? If so, I'd like to buy it.
