Need some help to get MAME working
#380771 - 01/22/19 03:45 PM

Because an old version of mame (0.35) I have with roms is causing trouble with my desktop, both on Win 7 and opensuse (Linux), I decided to install a newer version of mame, and went on the hunt for roms.

So I installed on openSUSE (Linux) MAME 0.185 from the official repositories.

First copied the old roms from MAME 0.35 into the rom folder, this does not work.
Then made a new folder ( in home ) and added that to MAME.
Inserted the roms there and again it does not work.

So I searched for newer roms and found a pack which should be for MAME 0.183. ( extracted pacman from it, into the rom folder )

Again this does not work, every time I try to start a game, MAME tells me there are roms files or chd? files missing.

What am I doing wrong?

I have been googling for days and I am confused.

Do I need update packs, to bring the 0.183 roms to 0.185 ?

Every page I find, tells me to copy the roms into the rom folder and it should work, but it does not.

Am I missing something?

First of all, the current version is .205...you should stick to the latest.
Romsets should be placed in MAME's 'roms' folder (or whatever you assigned as rompath in mame.ini)

Sets should be placed there in their archive form...so for example your_rompath\pacmania.zip pr your_rompath\pacmanania.7z. If you want them decompressed, use a subfolder in the romfolder named after the set, e.g. your_rompath\pacmania\pn_chr-0.bin and so on

Sets usually require files from other sets (parent/clone relationships, device sets, bios sets, so you need to ensure that you have all required sets, otherwise MAME will moan...but actually it tells you which file is missing.

Keeping a set collection up to date falls under the term rom management...

Thank you, I will try to put all roms in the rom folder and see if that helps.

Will also look for latest MAME.

To keep it short, problem solved.

I was missing libutf8proc1 - a Library for processing UTF-8 encoded Unicode strings.

I just did a test and played ms pacman.

This might be of interest to other Linux users.

If you installed from your distro's package repo, library dependencies should be handled automatically. Report it to the packager if you had to manually install a library.
