Spyhunter Van light flashes in MAME64 but not MAME32
#380410 - 12/29/18 09:31 PM

I have MAME64 v0.200 on win 10 PC and weapons van light flashes on screen (and on ouput = windows). However MAME32 same version v0.200 on XP SP3 PC with same rom set, lights weapons van light on screen (and on ouput = windows) but it doesn't flash.

Both 64 and 32 bit should flash. Could it be a setting difference? Where should I look? I haven't found it so far.

why did you just register today, and start asking questions about a mame version that's 5 versions old? Might still be the case (I don't know who would have both a 32 and a 64 version of mame to play around with other than to show a bench test...), but still...

look in both the main directory and in the .ini folder and delete the .ini file with the same name as your mame executable, if you think it's a setting.

URH,

Not much happens in 5 revisions, my oldest machine runs a MAME version that is over 10 years old. "If it ain't broke don't fix it".

I'm new here, but I have been involved with MAME , mostly hardware, like MK64 keyboard encoder over on arcade controls forum site 'on and off' over more than 15 years.

Yes, it it a setting issue. A fresh install for MAME32 flashes on WIN10 and XP machine. I'll try to compare the two installs this week to see if I can identify the difference. I'll report if I find it. Although I may be satisfied that it works now and move on.

A surprising amount happens in 5 revisions (that's almost half a year) and an astronomical amount has happened / been improved in 10 years to the point where I would actually consider a 10 year old build to fail on the "If it ain't broke.." part, although as a result a 10 year old machine would struggle with anything current (not as much as a shitty Pi or the like, but it would)

Although in this case, no, I don't think anything has changed, and it was strange advice to be given as there really shouldn't be any differences between 64-bit and 32-bit apart from 32-bit having significantly worse performance and potential memory issues if doing complex setups like multi-cart NeoGeo with the bigger games.

I found the cause for no flashing. It is the spy hunter game itself. MAME starts up where the game was running before. If there is coin registered the light will flash but will stop flashing after a while.

So the difference was just in the elapsed time between coin input on keyboard and the present saved state.

In old MAME versions I believe this was stored in STA directory, but it has moved, not sure where.

states still go in the STA directory

What advice would that be? I only said I didn't know anybody who would use both 32 and 64bit builds on the same machine.

And to the OP, if it's an issue with timing of coin insertion vs save state, it's not a config issue (and deleting the .sta and/or NVRAM (depending on what the particular game uses) would clear it)

In this case, as he was using the same version of 32 and 64 (which yes, is a bit weird in the first place, there's no reason to use 32) it was always more likely to be a config issue than a version issue.

So suggesting a clean install of each would have been a more logical suggestion.

It's obviously better to have people on the latest version, but the signs didn't point at that :-)
