The Who sucks fucking dicks
#380086 - 12/17/18 04:08 AM

Talentless entitled little pricks put together in a band by corporations that couldn't write their way out of a wet paper bag with a steel pen in their hand. Biggest hits were making fun of someone's stutter and slapping together the shitbag lamest lyrics of all time in 20 minutes about a deaf dumb and blind child playing pinball. Townsend the child porn collector probably wanted to buttfuck rape him up the deaf asshole raw dog while he played pinball.

Whoever it was (someone in the group or management) that decided to hire drummer Keith Moon got that one thing correct. I liked Keith's drumming, but when Jeff Porcaro and Vinnie Colaiuta came along in late 1970s with their insane drumming styles, I switched to becoming a fan of their work and listened to those two on various albums (different groups) over the years.

o/t:

The one thing that always impressed me about Frank Zappa was Zappa knew how to hire the best talented musicians to play in his various group ensembles over the decades. Zappa was a decent guitarist, but his strengths were music composing and hiring talented performers that could understand his music and play the pieces flawlessly. iirc from reading a magazine interview with Frank back in the 1980s:

"I consider myself a good guitarist, but not like guitarist Steve Vai talented. That is why I hire performers that are talented like Steve Vai to play my music."

It's that genius that made me appreciate Frank's attitude even if Frank's personality might have rubbed off on some folks the wrong way.

Yeah I'm more impressed with composition of songs I like more than being the one to play the songs. Country is the biggest mess of that. The only Garth Brooks song I like he didn't even write, friends in low places, and I think that launched his career. Not sure if Elton John ever wrote anything, maybe he did. Anyway nobody ever talks about composition enough. I've enjoyed some Zappa but it's not really my thing but I respect him.

Elton John didn't write any of his memorable songs. All the songs he actually wrote himself are boring soppy shit. For example he wrote the songs for the sound track of The Lion King (Disney) himself.

Well granted that is pathetic but it's also very interesting - if anyone knows facts like this about other famous artists please post them in this thread, I'm totally liking this.

OK, let's have some stupid trivia about where bands got their material from.

Hanson wrote all their own songs, and played all their instruments with the exception of drums on MMMBop. Originally, MMMBop was meant to be a far less up-beat ballad, but the producer convinced them they were better off hiring a session drummer and selling to teen girls on cuteness factor. It makes the song quite ironic because it sound so upbeat and cheerful while the lyrics about how you most of your friends won't be there for you long term.

All of Tatu's songs on their first album were written by a child psychologist/counselor. Hence shit about teenage lesbians not being accepted by their parents, girls in love with gay boys, etc. Pretending to be lesbians was always just a gimmick, and it fell apart when one of them got pregnant to the other one's boyfriend.

Stefani "Lady Gaga" Germanotta writes all her own material, and maintains tight control over production, music video content, choreography, costumes, and live shows. Before her recording career, Sony/ATV hired her to write songs for various acts, including Britney Spears, New Kids on the Block, Fergie, and The Pussycat Dolls. She also recorded reference vocals for various performers.

Leah Haywood recorded a couple of horribly autotuned pop tunes (e.g. Taking Back What's Mine), and backing vocals for some other acts (e.g. on Celine Dion's "That's the Way it Is"), but seemed to get out of singing as quickly as possible. Since then she's done writing and production work for acts including Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Nicki Minaj, and Ashley Tisdale, but avoided the microphone. It's like singing a couple of throw-away pop tunes was just a way for her to get a foot in the door before moving to the behind-the-scenes work she actually wanted to do.

Prince wrote some of The Bangles', Cyndi Lauper's and Sinead O'Connor's biggest hits, but you already knew that.

Max Martin is a pop hit machine, like the SAW of the 21st century. Britney Spears, Pink, Taylor Swift, and in particular Katy Perry, all owe chart-topping hits to him. Of course, kids these days don't realise just how many hits SAW shit out in the '80s - Kylie Minogue owes her music career to SAW.

I forgot partner's name and had to look it up.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_Taupin

Taupin's lyrics include such songs as "Rocket Man", "Levon", "Crocodile Rock", "Honky Cat", "Tiny Dancer", "Candle in the Wind", "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting", "Bennie and the Jets", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters", "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me", "The Bitch is Back", "Daniel", and 1970's "Your Song", their first hit. Hits in the 1980s include "I'm Still Standing", "I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues", "Sad Songs", and "Nikita." In the 1990s, Taupin and John had more hits, including "The One", "Simple Life", "The Last Song", "Club at the End of the Street" and "Believe." In September 1997, Taupin rewrote the lyrics of "Candle in the Wind" for "Candle in the Wind 1997", a tribute to the late Diana, Princess of Wales.

It also somewhat reminds me of Burt Bacharach teaming up with a writer (Hal, forget name, that also did 'Alfie' and I believe Pussycat as well iirc) that did the lyrics arrangement back in 1960s for some of Burt's well known songs.

Ozzy, and I'm a fan, never wrote his songs (well, he wrote Junior's Eyes). Geezer was Sabbath's lyricist. And, for the first four Ozzy solo albums, Robert Daisley wrote the lyrics. So why mention the solo stuff, well, if you ask Ozzy, or look at the writing credits you'll see Ozzy's name. He paid Robert for not just the use of the lyrics but to also say he wrote them. Side note: this is why Jake Lee left, Ozzy wouldn't credit him with the music Jake wrote.

That reminds me of the spat Paul McCartney had with Yoko Ono. The songs with the writing credited to Lennon/McCartney weren't always collaborations - often they were written entirely by one or the other. McCartney wanted the order of the names reversed for the songs that were entirely his work going forward, but Yoko Ono made a big scene over wanting to preserve the "Lennon/McCartney brand" or something.

McCartney was wrong. As a songwriter he should have known that "Lennon/McCartney" flows better.

Elton john has indeed written songs in their entirely (both music and lyrics), but only some. The vast majority of his lyrics are written first, by Bernie Taupin, then Elton John writes the music to match, and does the performance. They are never in the same room during the process.

Prince, however, was a complete badass. On his debut album, every voice and every instrument was all him. Plenty of big-name female singers became famous for songs that Prince wrote for them...

Another tidbit: Most any person I meet in Japan pretty much hates Yoko Ono.
