Asteroid Deluxe, the most demanding non-3d game on mame?
#379624 - 11/18/18 03:41 PM

Why that ANCIENT game it's so demanding, it's because of the sound and the vector graphics? it's almost 3 times slower than Kid Niki on latest MAME, it's even more demanding than original PONG

it's something with your config, as it's 5 times faster than Kid Niki here.

Oh yeah, sure, post screenshots. Don't bother posting your config or anything so that anyone can actually HELP YOU or anything. And 194% versus 254% isn't even remotely "3 times slower" unless you're fantastically bad at math.

As far as I know, wasn't Asteroids using discrete logic?

Video Mode makes a difference too.
Try -video d3d, -video opengl, -video bgfx options.. and you fail to mention if HLSL is being deployed (or even bgfx's shaders). Those post-processing options take cycles away, even if your have a top tier graphics card. One out of rage HLSL/Shader setting can slow things to a literal crawl, so be careful.

I can confirm that on my little MAME PC ( Intel Atom x5-Z8350 Processor 2GB DDR3 - hardly a power house) runs Asteroids and Asteroids Deluxe at 100% under MAMEUI64 with no frame skip. Interestingly, Kid Niki runs at 50%. However, games like Dangon Feveron and Cotton (probably far more demanding than KN) run 100% so maybe this is an issue with the KN driver.

Kid Niki (as well as the entire m62.cpp machine list) has a section of digitized elements using discrete components. The percussion/drum samples to take up a lot of CPU cycles in the current netlist framework. In the end, while other machines may seem more demanding, this one is for the reasons specified.

Start from beginning with:

What version of MAME currently running?
Is it 32bit or 64bit variety?

And as already mentioned in this thread, post the contents of the settings of the .ini configuration file here in this thread.

And also see Tafoid's post for other tips.

-
"Video Mode makes a difference too.Try -video d3d, -video opengl, -video bgfx options."
-

And also post any specific HLSL configuration settings in case you are using specific HLSL video ouput.

Factors to consider:

Asteroids Deluxe analog audio (discrete), uses backdrop artwork image component, but even if backdrop artwork is not being used, I believe it still polls/searches for artwork piece even if user does not have image in the artwork folder. That is what I vaguely recall being mentioned on the forum in the past, but it is a guess. I'd still go with what Tafoid had posted earlier.

Pong...no backdrop artwork is used. (actual Pong cabs hardware monitor was actual portable black and white tv monitors that were modified to work with various pong games) and should be somewhat slower compared to Asteroid Deluxe.

Try testing other vector games that use artwork backdrop components such as Vectorbeam's Warriors or Cinematronics Armor Attack to see if similar slowdowns occur. Those are the only vector games that come to mind that use backdrop artwork pieces. The problem is those two games do not have analog audio (discrete) emulated yet, but only simulated with external audio sample files. Without audio being truly emulated, not possible to see if slowdown issues happen with those two games as well.
