Upgrading CPU
#379427 - 11/09/18 03:40 AM

My current CPU a Core i5 4460 3.2Ghz is not kepping up with the optimizations on some games(San Fransisco Rush series, STV games, and some Vegas board, MODEL 2 games too), should i upgrade to a Core i5 8400? it would got me to run these more demanding boards at 100%?

If I were you, I'd take the plunge and upgrade to an i7. I'm running an i7-7700 (having upgraded from the exact same CPU as you) and it's running everything I throw at it flawlessly, and that's with HLSL enabled, too.

With Mame, I truly think i7 is the way to go for demanding games.

I don't think an i7 is required or even gets you that much over cheaper processors. I did some benchmarks a while back comparing a Pentium G3258 to the i7-4790K both overclocked to 4.5GHz...

The most important thing is raw clock speed. Multiple cores also benefit some drivers that can take advantage of them. Also, Intel CPUs generally have better performance than AMD CPUs in MAME.

If you're going to build a new system to run MAME the best CPU choice right now is this one for $170 on Amazon...

Intel Core i3-8350K Coffee Lake Quad-Core 4.0 GHz LGA 1151
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0759FWJDK

It's already clocked at 4.0GHz so you don't need an expensive motherboard capable of overclocking. The stock speed is respectable. Though, since it's an unlocked "K" processor, you could certainly try to overclock it if you desire.

But the demanding games(Rush 2049, Model 2 games, etc) use multiple cores, and a Core i5 8400 has a boost to 4.0Ghz, and it's multithread performance it's better than an 4970K and a 6700k and it's on par with the 7700k in some tests, and it has 6 cores, with Single Thread Performance of ~2200
, it isn't sufficient?

Honestly, the chips are pretty comparable...

The i5 is $30 more on Amazon. You get two extra cores and 1MB more cache. It's up to you whether that's worth it. I don't think it will make much difference with MAME.

On the other hand, the i3 is unlocked, so if you put a good cooler on it and get the right motherboard, you could probably overclock it to 5GHz if you're lucky.

I personally have never been a fan of overclocking; I'd rather run at cooler temps and have stuff last for as long as possible. For me, OC and turbo modes are a no-no, hence the i7.

NEVER ASK THIS QUESTION! new [Re: andreol263]
#379492 - 11/11/18 12:38 AM

You'll NEVER get a definitive answer that everyone will agree on. Heck, you'll be lucky if even 2 people agree on the same CPU. You ask 100 people this question, you're going to get 100 different suggestions & each one will SWEAR they know best. All this question leads to is a lot of bickering & you're usually no better off than before you asked

i get it, so the extra cores wouldn't be so useful in 3D games?

MAME is simple though. Get the processor with the highest clock rate you can afford.

For general purpose, I agree because everyone has a different definition of general purpose.

Give me a set of parameters to benchmark with, on a game of interest to you, and I'll run it on my i3-8350K @ 4.8Ghz to give you a reference point.
