Is it possible to completely update one MAME ROM from 1999 to present day?
#379035 - 10/18/18 11:32 PM

I found a good deal on and bought Capcom Coin-Op Classics Series 1 (an officially-licensed MAME emulator with a few Capcom ROMs) with the intention of taking the ROM for Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting from the CD and updating it to its present-day MAME incarnation, so I can use it with modern versions of MAME and maybe Final Burn Alpha.

Is it possible? I haven't received the CD yet but it's from 1999, so I'm hoping there's a way...

I don’t know specifically, but if you need additional ROM information, then it’s not legally possible. When you buy software, you are legally entitled to the information it contains, and you can modify it for your own use as you see fit, but you are not entitled to any more information (like an update) unless explicitly granted.

Shoot. Thanks for the clarification though.

I'll keep the CD for future reference...

I think it was a custom build licensed with Hanaho, who were briefly great friends with mame with the Hotrod arcade controller. I used to have the cd, I'm sure I've sent a dump of it on the DU list years ago.

Roms don't ever go through an update process, they just get replaced. I guess I don't fully understand the question, but they don't get updated/patched. If you're really trying to stay on a pointlessly clean side of the law I guess you could ask someone to take your sets an create a patch diff file based on the newest version but that would be bonkers. If you want to support Capcom there are plenty of ways. Buy their packs on steam for example.

To the best of my knowledge the Hanaho/Capcom package was officially licensed... by Capcom, not by MAME.

From what I can recall the emulator it provides is NOT MAME. If I recall correctly, it was an emulator developed by Larry Bank of Bitbank Software. Its closest oldskool emulator relative therefore might be "HIVE", just a bit newer: http://caesar.logiqx.com/php/emulator.php?id=hive
Larry's fully capable of writing his own arcade emulators.

Maybe I've forgotten though. 1999 was just before my time on the team.

The closest thing to an "officially licensed" MAME might be Taito Legends (and Taito Legends 2?), which had emulator development assistance from Nicola, Mish, Jarek, and a few others.

That's the only situation like that I can remember.

I've taken a look and you're definitely right: Capcom Coin-Op Classics Series 1 is a custom version of MAME32, something in the 0.36 cycle, published by HanaHo Games and provided with their HotRod joysticks around 1999-2000. The latest folder/file date in the package dates to 11/29/1999.

As for whether it was done with the blessing of Nicola & co., I am checking the archives to see. You all may be right that it was a special one-time deal I've forgotten the details on. At any rate the deal probably would have been with MAME32-devs and not MAMEdevs.

I was also right regarding Larry Bank, but that was regarding a different package released by Hanaho from 2003 called "Capcom Arcade Hits Volume 3" (and possibly "Capcom Arcade Hits Volume 2" as well?)

You were told here what the deal was.

Then, some months later, you were told here what the deal was.

Then, about a year later, you were again informed in this thread that you should revisit your views.

Then, about a month later, you came around to tell us what a fine, upstanding person you are for not - gasp! - downloading a PS1 BIOS ROM.

I'm beginning to think - actually, no, I definitely think - that you have no real interest in following anyone's advice in any of these threads. No, you just want to virtue-signal, and have everyone pat you on the back and tell you what a fine, upstanding citizen you are for not downloading old arcade games.

Well my response hasn't changed, and it should be readily apparent that nobody else's response has changed either. The responses aren't ever going to change. So just download the ROMs and be happy.

These kind of reddit users remind me of cartoon characters turning themselves over for removing a tag from a mattress.

What brings him at peace I wonder. Supporting a second hand market that overvaluates and restricts its access? The same one companies have been battling for decades because they don't see a single penny from them? If he is really that worried for internal peace, he shouldn't be emulating in the first place. Just buy an actual product on sale and be done with it.

Or maybe it's like those competitions some vegetarian circles have. Like in bragging aloud who is more vegan (or in this case legal) than the other even when no one asked.

Also, unless he holds some rare item no one heard about, the dumps he does should match with what is publicly available. Otherwise indicates it's a bad dump with a high probability it won't work on current emulation.

Dump/submit a couple of games then send me a PM. If you've already dumped stuff then skip to step 2.

I tried it and it worked! new [Re: SpiDoL]
#379153 - 10/27/18 08:56 AM

I got the CD yesterday (which actually also contained ROMs for World Warrior and Champion Edition as well as Hyper Fighting!), downloaded clrmamepro and a DAT file for the latest version of FBA, and ran the ROMs through the rebuilder program.

It worked. All three ROMs were successfully updated and now I can play them in modern versions of FBA! Granted, they're not the latest revisions of the games (except Hyper Fighting) and they're missing a few (optional) pieces of ROM, but at least they're playable.

Ahhh. Now I can finally declare Street Fighter II my Favorite Game Of All Time, as I have an arcade-perfect rendition of the game that I legally own and can play legitimately...
