Problem with MAME controls

Hello all, I'm trying play a few games on MAME and when choosing a game and during a game, the down arrow gets constantly pressed usually random for selecting and after i lose a life during a game and its starting to frustrate me
any known fixes?

In which games do you see this issue? (be specific)
Which version of MAME? (the latest version is MAME 0.201)
Is it the official build of MAME from MAMEdev.org or a build acquired somewhere else?

I'm using the latest version of MAME which I got from MAMEDEV, it happens mostly running Xevious however most other roms I use don't utilize this so i'm unable to say for other ROM's

Did you install it over an already existant MAME folder? In that case, I suggest doing a clean install, as doing such thing can lead to random problems with the controls in specific games.

The re-install was working until today when i tried Xevious 3/DG, just holds down the down arrow key which prevents me from destroying things
