Space Fury, Wizard of Wor Etc... Samples
#377439 - 07/04/18 08:50 PM

What was the last version of Mame to use samples for the above games. I typically stay current within a few versions (I am running 195, whereas 199 is current.

The sound in games like Space Fury and WOW drives me nuts, and I want to reinstall an old version just to run some of the older games.

THanks in advance.

For games that used Votrax sc-01 hardware for speech effects:

-
http://mamedev.org/releases/whatsnew_0181.txt

0.181
--

-votrax sc01: Simulate. [O. Galibert]
* Complete simulation of digital section based on die imaging
* Removed now-obsolete samples
* Plosives are still imperfect
-

.180 version or earlier is what you want.

For Space Fury, I am not sure what version you need to revert to for that game. That one will require much more time spent searching of how far back to revert to.

Space Fury parent has a weird pitch change:

Use a clone for that game.

Wizard of Wor, Qbert and others all suffer from the experimental Votrax emulation rather than samples. It is a known issue:

You've been advised already what versions to use for older sample behavior.

sirscotty will thank you. I didn't know that game already had a bug entry.

Users will have to get used to running a few different versions of MAME just for a specific game as usual. The continuous Asteroids audio complaints from years 2001 to 2004 always brings back memories.....especially PacDude and his infamous rants towards MAMEdevs on old MAME.net forums days. Good times then. *some sarcasm*

Maybe if one of the contributor's can go out of the way to screw up/break Slither gameplay emulation will get PacDude to visit here and go on some tirade.

MooglyGuy was also kind enough to fork a version from 0.189 with the old behavior enabled if you want something a little bit more recent.

I wish samples be added back to all games that now have samples simulation.
Why not making this an on/off setting in mame.ini / gamename.ini so user can enable external wav samples for specific games, if chosen ? I know MAME is all about accurary emulation but sill...

Simulated samples could be enabled by default though.
This would make everyone happy, and it would allow MAME devs to ajust the sample simulation without resorting to older builds or alternate sources.

I'm still 99% sure the Space Fury thing is intentional and those roms would give that sound on hardware since it's only applying to specific sets.
