KonamiGX performance
#377174 - 06/25/18 12:11 PM

Evenin',

I have a question; is the KonamiGX driver especially performance-hungry? I have a not-terrible PC (3.2 Ghz Quadcore, 2 GB Geforce 750TI) but I can't get either "Sexy or Goku Parodius" to run well at all.

I get stuttering, sound skips, framerate drops etc. I've messed around with the usual suspects (lowered sound quality, skipped a couple of frames, disabled bilinear filtering etc.) If I switch disable HLSL the problem a SLIGHTLY improved, but it's still not great.

Is this a known thing of KonamiGX games? Other demanding drivers (CPS III, for example) run great.

Any help much appreciated.

CPS3 is not a demanding driver

My 2 year old i7-6700HQ 2.60ghz laptop runs it full speed, if I unthrottle it gets over 200% most of the time.

What do you mean by "not-terrible"? My laptop can't run qsound LLE full speed, so IMO it's terrible.

The CPU is an Intel i5-4460 @ 3.2 GHz

So Basically, what Haze is saying is that it's down to the KonamiGX driver being a demanding driver and as such, there isn't a great deal I can do about it with this hardware?

I Have the same CPU and it's runs great, and the Konami GX isn't a demanding arcade board at all, try the 3D ones or the CAVE newest boards and you gonna see what's demanding(but it's gonna run fullspeed on our CPU, so don't worry), there's definetly something wrong with your MAME, try to make a clean install with the newest one

But what config are you using? Are you using HLSL at all? And if so, what GPU do you have? If I turn HLSL off it runs fine.

(Also, whether or not the original arcade board was demanding isn't necessarily indicative of how fast it will run in Mame).

I discounted HLSL because you said this....

"If I switch disable HLSL the problem a SLIGHTLY improved, but it's still not great. "

Just enabling hlsl with default settings makes no visible difference to how fast it runs (holding insert allows me to get 200%+) whether I use my NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M or Intel(R) HD Graphics 530, what card and settings are you using?

hlslpath hlsl
hlsl_enable 1
hlsl_oversampling 0
hlsl_write
hlsl_snap_width 2048
hlsl_snap_height 1536
shadow_mask_tile_mode 0
shadow_mask_alpha 0.0
shadow_mask_texture shadow-mask.png
shadow_mask_x_count 6
shadow_mask_y_count 4
shadow_mask_usize 0.1875
shadow_mask_vsize 0.25
shadow_mask_uoffset 0.0
shadow_mask_voffset 0.0
distortion 0.0
cubic_distortion 0.0
distort_corner 0.0
round_corner 0.0
smooth_border 0.0
reflection 0.0
vignetting 0.0
scanline_alpha 0.0
scanline_size 1.0
scanline_height 1.0
scanline_variation 1.0
scanline_bright_scale 1.0
scanline_bright_offset 0.0
scanline_jitter 0.0
hum_bar_alpha 0.0
defocus 0.0,0.0
converge_x 0.0,0.0,0.0
converge_y 0.0,0.0,0.0
radial_converge_x 0.0,0.0,0.0
radial_converge_y 0.0,0.0,0.0
red_ratio 1.0,0.0,0.0
grn_ratio 0.0,1.0,0.0
blu_ratio 0.0,0.0,1.0
saturation 1.0
offset 0.0,0.0,0.0
scale 1.0,1.0,1.0
power 1.0,1.0,1.0
floor 0.0,0.0,0.0
phosphor_life 0.0,0.0,0.0

It could be a frame rate issue, I don't use any sync/triple buffering. You might want to start from scratch with a default mame.ini

Those settings kill my graphics card, drops to about 60-70%. You might want to go through and figure out what settings are slowing you down.
