software lists and merged vs split ROMS
#377040 - 06/21/18 04:54 AM

I was thinking about trying out some console/computer games in MAME using software lists.

I've never messed with software lists, so this is new to me.

Does it matter if I use a merged software list ROM set or a split software list ROM set?

What about when using a front end like Attract Mode (or some other popular front end)? Does merged or split work better in this case?

As long as MAME can find all required files, it doesn't care if it's merged, split, or w/e else might be out there.

The key is simply having the locations correct in the rompath of your mame.ini separated by semicolons

Code:

rompath "J:\MAME ROMs (T7Z-Merged);J:\MAME CHDs;J:\MAME Software List ROMs (T7Z-Merged);L:\MAME SOFTWARE LIST CHDs"

I've never used AM so I can't comment on that one. GameEX, QMC2, and others won't care what your ROMs are as long as MAME finds what it needs and successfully launches the set you pick in the front end.

OK. I'll have to poke around on the Attract Mode forums and see how it deals with Software Lists to make sure before I spend a lot of time and bandwidth on this.

I had one more question. I noticed that a certain site that shall remain nameless has these two sets...

MAME 0.198 ROMs (bios-devices)
MAME 0.198 Software List ROMs (machines-bios-devices)

Are they required now are they already incorporated into these other sets?...

MAME 0.198 ROMs (merged)
MAME 0.198 Software List ROMs (merged)

All bios and devices are in the full MAME ROMs set.
You can safely skip those two torrents.

In mame.ini, what is swpath used for?

Does it have anything to do with Software ROMs and Software CHDs?

I think it's the default location if you TAB into the File Manager and want to run "loose software"

I've never needed it when using software list ROMs or CHDs

I can't remember it's usefulness or why it's needed. Perhaps a Dev knows and can answer.
