Pitfall 2 using MAME 0.196 does not work, bug in MAME?

Hello!
I try to play Pitfall 2 using MAME, but the game misbehaves, goes crazy and crashes. The behaviour is completely unpredictable, seems like a bug in MAME. I use Fedora Linux 27 package and run it like this:
mame coleco -window -cart /usr/share/mame/roms/coleco/pitfall2.col
[kalevi@localhost ~]$ sha1sum /usr/share/mame/roms/coleco/pitfall2.col 2642c458899c1cafa2f3b9e0959b9ead5829aa68 /usr/share/mame/roms/coleco/pitfall2.col
[kalevi@localhost ~]$ rpm -qi mame Name : mame Version : 0.196
Using ColEm Unix-version, this same ROM file works just fine in NTSC mode.

Man, thanks for confirming this. I just did a GIT checkout from Github and am in the process of building MAME. Hoping the newest snapshot would work.

No, Coleco Pitfall 2 goes crazy with the newest snapshot, too.

was broken by this change https://github.com/mamedev/mame/commit/4...3a6d26369445683
dev responsible should have been alerted by the notification there now

And thanks to you and the dev for correcting the issue. The aforementioned change not only broke Pitfall II, but also brought Q*bert to playing at a near crawl.
Tested with a GIT release from May 10, and all is well.
