Are there any windows-based emulators out there that emulate the Miracle Piano system (any of the platform versions)? Specifically is there something that can use the real MIDI keyboard sitting in front of me?

I think you can use the Amiga version in WinUAE. Topic on EAB.
From a quick google it is also possible to run the PC version in DOSBox and use it with any MIDI keyboard.

I have the Miracle rom for SNES running in MAME What do I do to get MAME to recognize (and use) the bog standard MIDI keyboard connected to my PC? -listmidi shows the right midi devices but I cant find the right command line option to tell MAME to use these midi devices for its emulated Miracle.
I tried -ctrl1 miracle_piano but that doesn't seem to do it since there is nowhere to specify the MIDI interface to use.

You need to use the -midiin and -midiout options to specify the interface to use (it looks like a media image device):
Code:
./mame64 snes -cart miraclep -ctrl1 miracle_piano -listmedia ) SYSTEM MEDIA NAME (brief) IMAGE FILE EXTENSIONS SUPPORTED ---------------- --------------------------- ------------------------------- snes midiin (min) .mid midiout (mout) .mid cartridge (cart) .sfc

Tried that, MIDI input works (and the Miracle software picks up the inputs) but output just prints "MIDI out: packet assembly overflow, contact MAMEdev!" (everything works just fine in other MIDI programs so its not the keyboard or the USB-MIDI device as far as I can tell)

What version are you using (of MAME, and which system)? That hasn't happened to me in literally years.

Official windows x64 0.196 binaries on Windows 7 x64. USB-MIDI device is some sort of generic no-name thing I got given as a gift. The keyboard is a Radio Shack MD-981 (some sort of re-branded Casio I believe)
When I get some time I will get the compile environment, build MAME and debug the midi code to see if I can see what's going on Is there a guide on the best way to do that anywhere? (debugging of the MAME binary that is, I know about the compile instructions and tool downloads already)
